Last week saw a flurry of activity in fashion circles with designer Maheen launching her second store in Karachi’s posh Defence area with her funky and colourful Gulabo line as the main theme.
The affair was a happening do with the who’s who of fashion in attendance. Maheen was her usual majestic self and received guests and praise with equal ease, taking time out umpteen times to explain the mechanism behind her Gulabo line.
Also, a new lifestyle store saw the efforts of designers Kamiar Rokni and Maheen of Karma, Hasan Shehryar Yasin of HSY, Sara of Sublime and Asad Tareen materialize with the opening up of its Karachi chapter on main Zamzama Boulevard. While the first of it’s kind opened up in Lahore sometime back with Nomi Ansari, Deepak and Body Focus, with Karachi, The Designers has taken another step in the direction. Speaking to Asad Tareen, it is believed that Dubai is to be the next destination. As for the Karachi outlet, the interior has been done to suit every designer’s individual taste comprising wood-panelled partitions and plush sofa seats upholstered in white leather for a minimalistic effect. And oh, there’s a cafe somewhere in the works as well. —Faisal Quraishi
Moving messages
If a picture says a thousand words then imagine the impact of a dozen movies. The World Wildlife Fund, Karachi recently hosted a travelling environmental film festival, in an attempt to enlighten the masses about various environmental issues that have engulfed the world in general, and Pakistan in particular.
The short video documentaries shed light on issues like the dying state of mangrove forests, Lahore’s waste, global warming and problems faced by our fisherfolk, among others. Particularly moving was a song by WWF Malaysia on the theme, ‘save the world’ which was indeed an audio-visual treat.
The documentaries mainly focused on creating awareness among people and including their participation into making this world a better, healthier place to live. Let’s hope these movies find their way into mainstream electronic media so that the message reaches to a larger audience. — Sa’adia Reza
Reema’s bubbly biz
Now that Meera is back in the news, how can Reema be far behind? The Bulandi star is making waves courtesy a soft-drink manufacturing company that has again featured her in their ad.
The latest on the fizzy alliance is that the new version was recently unveiled at the Cineplex. Reema was all smiles at the event and she has all the reason to be since she was the first Pakistani film actor to be signed on as the brand spokesperson by Pepsi followed by Shaan and then Ali Zafar. Reema (read Matrix?) Reloaded has been shot in Malaysia and will already be on air by the time this appears in print. —Capri
