Alien Vs Predator

In an attempt to evade the clichéd good guy vs bad guy routine, Hollywood has come up with a new formula: to cash in on established movie franchises. By pitting Freddy and Jason against each other (Freddy Vs Jason) and werewolves and vampires (Underworld), Hollywood is set to exploit (and abuse) the pre-existing hype of movie franchises.

Billionaire Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henricksen) learns about the existence of an ancient pyramid buried deep under the frozen wastes of Antarctica through satellite imaging. In a bid to be the first to unearth the temple, he assembles a team of experts. But once there, they find out that they are not the only ones in the pyramid. Not only must they dodge the aliens, they must also steer clear of the predator warriors who want to exterminate the aliens. Caught in the line of fire between the two foreign species, the humans must quickly align themselves with one of the two if they wish to survive.

The atrocious acting by a largely unknown cast causes the quality of Alien Vs Predator to nosedive decisively, making it this year’s summer bomb. The storyline has been preposterously caricatured and results in an incoherent yawn fest. Clocking in at a little under an hour-and-a-half, you should simply skip this one and watch the classic originals instead. —Taimur Saleem

Taxi

Reminiscent of the ’70s when Hollywood had a wild romance with car chases, Taxi stars Queen Latifah as Belle, a speed demon who has just graduated from being a delivery person to a New York cabbie. But hers is not an ordinary cab. With all the essentials of a NASCAR hot-rod fitted into it, Belle whizzes around the Big Apple like she’s in the Indianapolis 500. And these driving abilities come in useful when a cop (Jimmy Fallon), ‘recruits’ her to help him chase a group of bank robbers. But these robbers are actually a gang of crooks led by leggy Brazilian femme fatale Gisele Bundchen, making her film debut.

Vivian storms her BMW through New York’s streets, train stations and safe-driving zones while pulling off some truly daring capers. It’s all up to Belle and the cop to stop this parade of vivacious outlaws, at the same time saving her taxi and his job.

Apart from the star cast, the main attraction of the film is the chase sequences. Innovatively filmed, they, in fact, capture the true essence of the movie. As for Gisele … she is simply breathtaking. Oh, and her acting is good too. —Atif Khan
