If you fell in love with the 1995 romantic jewel Before Sunrise, then you are going to love its sequel, Before Sunset.
Before Sunrise was the tale of two strangers, Texan Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Parisian Celine (Julie Delpy), who meet in Vienna on a train and spend an intoxicating evening together, mostly talking, before parting at sunrise. They promise to meet six months later but don’t. Before Sunset is set nine years later in Paris, when Jesse is promoting his book, a slightly fictional account of their one night romance, when he sees Celine in the bookshop.
For both of them, the feelings come rushing back, and the two spend the time together that they have before Jesse’s flight back home. The initial awkward pauses give way to easy conversation and the two soon drop their defences to reveal the regrets and frustrations they have experienced. Celine has a boyfriend, while a failing marriage and fatherhood has made Jesse more cynical.
Will they take the second chance they have or will they live with regret once again? You have to watch the movie to find out. A wonderful romance that is not easy to forget.—A.A.
Resident Evil — Apocalypse
I was wondering why Sony pushed back the release date of Resident Evil: Apocalypse to September, a month reserved specifically for out of summer releases. Considering that the original was mildly profitable and enormously popular (at least in Pakistan), the sequel looked great as far as publicity mattered.
However, the movie is, to put it delicately, a putrid, unattractive, terribly gruesome, ghastly mess. What you are in all likelihood able to find through the murky script (which I am confident a 12-year-old can write better), are a bunch of locations from the Resident Evil 2 video game; a recount of the original movie and an excuse to slaughter any chances of characterization by flexing mundane action and poor effects.
The story, if you’re still interested, starts when Alice (a sleepwalking Milla Jovovich) awakens from her encounters in the original and finds the city almost decimated by a virus. What happened was that the virus from the first film escaped thorough the Hive and infected Raccoon City.
Now, the only way out for Alice and the others is to rescue a scientist’s daughter, who is lost in the infected city. To sum it up, this one’s truly sad.—Mohammad Kamran Jawaid
