Amateurs’ Melodies paid tributes to two Pakistani and two Indian composers by devoting an evening at the PACC, Karachi, to their memorable numbers. Amateurs rendered the compositions of Master Inayat Husain, Hemant Kumar, Ravi and Robin Ghosh. Coincidentally, two of the maestros are from the Punjab and two from Bengal, the regions that have made most impressive contributions to film music of the subcontinent.
The programme began with three songs from Naila, Azra and Gumnam, all beautifully rendered by the youngest singer of the evening, Bushra Hammad. In the post-intermission session, she sang two numbers of Robin Ghosh. Bushra Suleman rendered a Ghosh number from Bandish — Tujhe dil se laga loon. The second Bushra has been singing in these concerts for quite some time.
Kamran Saggu, a newcomer, won the hearts of the audience by singing Kishore Kumar’s Woh shaam kuch ajeeb thi from Khamoshi, a Hemant Kumar composition, soulfully. But his forte is Mohammed Rafi’s songs for like the late singer, he can infuse expressions in his renditions. He sang three Rafi numbers — one before the interval and two after — and they were all truly great. Aamer Agha sang three of Mehdi Hasan’s songs, and one each of Hemant Kumar and Nazeer Beg (aka Nadeem).
Another regular at the concerts was Sohail Qadeer whose solos were good but his duet with Bushra Suleman, Do pyase dil eik huwe (originally sung by Mehdi Hasan and Mehnaz for Robin Ghosh), was among the best numbers rendered that evening.
Musician Z. H. Faheem, who has a soft and mellow voice so suited for Saleem Raza’s numbers, enthralled the audience with his rendition of the late singer’s immortal ghazal from the movie Seema — Aay meri jan-i-ghazal. Another singer blessed with a lovely voice is Zara Madani, who sang three numbers, all composed by Hemant Kumar, with remarkable ease. Suraiya Jabeen and Naeem Aziz were other amateurs who delighted the audience.
It was on Sultan Arshad’s initiative that Amateurs’ Melodies was formed. Its next function in November will have the members singing immortal numbers composed by Master Ghulam Haider and Naushad.
