The good, the bad and the ugly

By F.Q.

Relaunching of a popular brand of jeans can be quite a scandalous affair, as it was recently discovered. Although a much talked-about event in fashion circles and attended by the creme de la creme of society — fashion and style gurus along with the dreaded pen-pushers — the no-holds-barred event was a eye-popping experience, deserving classification in three distinct categories: the good, the bad and the ugly.

THE GOOD:

Here, the make-shift bar definitely deserves a mention, which later served as a ramp for the models to exhibit the wares. A novel idea that transformed an evening of fashion into a singles bar. A mounted screen flashed the reborn jeans, playing like an endless symphony, mesmerising the unsuspecting visitors.

Vinnie was a vision of loveliness thanks to her feathery look, courtesy Tariq Amin (would Freiha have it any other way?) while the male models, mostly from Khawar Riaz’s camp, specially Ali Anwar, Tahir Ali and Iman Ali also got a big thumbs-up from the audience.

THE BAD:

There’s a new definition of bad, and that, to many, is Aaminah Haq on the ramp. People might not have believed the critics, for it is known that Aaminah takes a lot of flak from them, but as soon as one saw her walk down the ramp, there was no denying it. It seems she’s just forgotten how to walk on a ramp. No wonder one gets to see so little of her in live shows. ‘Better stick to print shoots and soaps, girl!’ as someone remarked.

Then blue and yellow bobs? Now that’s a nightmare on Elm Street. But what could be worse than yellow wigs on girls? That goes for the boys too! That’s right, dear old Tariq Scissorhands had them planted on brawny topless hunks sliding down fireman’s poles and on to the ramp only to have the female brigade brand them with their lipsticks and lead them away like lapdogs. What both Freiha Altaf and Tariq Amin wanted to say came across loud and clear. It’s a pity that some (read most) in the audience had their eyes cast down in case things got worse.

THE UGLY:

Heard of the ugly duckling that turned into a beautiful swan. Yes? Now here’s a beautiful swan that was made to turn really, really nasty. Iraj, it seemed, was out to draw blood with her bullwhip and drew it she did — by the gallons. Her hellfire demeanour might have been easy to digest, but when she smothered her ‘man’ with shaving cream (was it sheer coincidence that he looked like a youngish Tariq Amin with mannerisms to match?) in what was an apparent attempt to shave him in a glass cubicle as part of the show, it ended up as the proverbial close shave.

What any of it had to do with jeans was a question most in the audience were asking. And the event manager, realizing the situation, tried to play it down by calling the media people and explaining the concept the next day! Even then it was generally assumed that that part of the night’s entertainment was quite suggestive in nature.

Jeans, today, come and have to be worn with a certain attitude, and that was what the Levis Reborn 501s fiesta was all about. However, there is such a thing as going overboard with the presentation, and keeping this particular show in mind, one could say the event managers really got carried away.
