Toy story

A fantasy about toys coming alive in a child’s bedroom at night — this made ‘Out of the Box’ fashion show a different experience.

Nothing could have prepared the guests at the poolside of a Karachi hotel for what was soon to follow — neither compere Fakhr-e-Alam’s gift of the gab nor the presence of designer Mahmood Bhatti. With the chief guest gone and the awards distribution ceremony over, the ramp was open for the fashion show, which was choreographed by Imran Kureishi.

The backdrop in sky blue and pale yellow stripes served as the setting for Iraj, dressed up as a life-size Barbie — to come tearing out of her box, accompanied by Ken. That got the show underway. What followed was a display of gowns, frocks, coveralls, dungarees, cotton shirts, camouflage-printed skirts, trousers and shorts, cotton flannel night-suits, woollen wigs and striped socks by some of the models, some of whom took to their new roles like fish to water. Others seemed a bit stiff and out-of-place. There was loud applause every time kids appeared on the ramp.

The clothes looked a bit monotonous, in spite of the refreshing themes of cowboys and Indians, wind-up and mechano toys, GI Joes and Janes and Jack-in-the-Box
