Well, Images is now a decade old — 10 years and 24 days to be specific. During this period, we have seen it create its own niche in the world of Pakistani journalism. There were some skeptics who thought a glitzy section like this would be out of character with Dawn’s sober style. The overwhelming response we have received from our readers has proved the skeptics wrong.
The task was to present to our readers a showbiz weekly that would endear itself to the younger lot without alienating Dawn’s traditional readers — the middle-aged professionals and policy-makers who run Pakistan. And to do this without actually being ‘glitzy.’
It was quite a surprise to be called one fine morning to the room of Editor Ahmad Ali Khan, that epitome of serious journalism, and to be told to prepare for a lightweight entertainment section. The editor thought the time was right to reach out to a younger readership. These 10 years have proved this right. It has been flattering to see other publications seeking to catch up.
Over the decade, contents in Images have led to quite a few controversies — the lead story in the very first issue on March 25, 1994, centred round Anita Ayub, who had created a stir by trying to participate in the World Beauty contest. What better heading, then, for the lead story than “Queen of controversy”?
At the same time, we have been acutely aware of our shortcomings, especially in a transformed social milieu in which showbiz and all fine arts are under attack. It has always been a delicate balancing act to report on the entertainment scene without being seen as promotional and without offending cultural sensibilities.
In the course of producing Images, we have come across all types of showbiz personalities, some with bloated egos. However, most have been warm and friendly. Images is nice to them, and in return we enjoy their respect. Where we go wrong, we never fail to publish corrections or retractions. There have also been quite a few legal notices. But, that is all part of the game. In the end, it has all been well worth all the trouble.
As we settle down for the next decade, we can only thank all our contributors and all those who have figured in our columns, and readers who have supported us.
