All of a sudden, India has become the new Promised Land for the nation’s popsters. Well – actually, it’s been so for quite some time, as way, way back in the ’80s, it was Nazia Hasan’s crooning for the Indian flick Qurbani, namely the smash disco-inflected single Aap jaisa koi, that made regional superstars out of Nazia Zoheb. A decade or so later Junoon also triumphed, conquering the Indian’s with their acoustic rocker, Sayonee. Ever since, everyone from Strings to Ali Haider to Fuzon has tried to cross the Wagah to crack the regional charts.
Recently, Karachi-based rockers Aaroh went the same route, hoping to mine some of the precious gold that lies in India’s billion-plus market. According to Kamran, the band’s keyboardist, the melodic foursome inked an album deal with Sony Music’s Indian arm to promote their debut album, Sawaal, in that country. The deal also includes a 10-concert tour as well as two videos. Not bad. Let’s see if all the paperwork translates into tangible success in India for the Aaroh lads. One thing’s for sure: if Aaroh breaks through in India, one can expect a truckload of Pakistani artists making a beeline for flights to New Delhi and Mumbai.—QAM
Kournikova seen all ovah
Tennis menace Anna Kournikova is looking available — very available. The Russian stunner recently turned up with baseball player Derek Jeter at a party hosted by nightclub impresario Tommy Puccio in Miami.
Soon after, she was adorning the arm of actor Mickey Rourke, the 9-1/2 Weeks actor now best known for his grapefruit-sized cheekbones. Kournikova and Rourke, who showed up at the Caramel lounge of a Las Vegas casino, declined to discuss their friendship when approached by a reporter.
Reps initially said that Kournikova came to Vegas to see a performance by her on-and-off boyfriend, Enrique Iglesias. Only, his tour wasn’t due in Vegas till a week after!
Also at the casino were Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, Mark Wahlberg, Leonardo DiCaprio, Luke Wilson, Lukas Haas, Pete Yorn and Tobey Maguire.
Oh, and Paris Hilton revealed the title of her long awaited first album: Screwed.—Rush and Molloy
Roots visited
Having performed recently at the closing ceremony of the Patiala Festival, Junoon have come back with happy memories. They were invited by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh who, after discovering that Salman and Shahryar’s mother was born in Patiala, invited her to come to India with the group.
The band were accompanied by the Maharani to the house where Salman’s mother grew up. The jubilation of being at her birthplace was mingled with sadness at seeing the dilapidated condition of the house. But the kindness shown by the host and the happy memories soon revived her. Shahryar says, “we were happy to see part of our roots this time.”—K.H
