It was a lively suburban evening. Forty brides sat with fluttering hearts, nervously awaiting their fate. No, they weren’t waiting for their turn to walk down the aisle, rather, they were getting ready to walk down the catwalk. The occasion was the silver jubilee of a local salon, organized by veteran beautician Shama Abdullah. Among the guests were renowned beauticians and media personalities.
The show started with a few words from Shama’s husband, after which the beauticians were asked to prepare their brides. There was no cultural bar as the brides sported both eastern and western styles. The participants were only allowed to apply fake eyelashes before the start of the show. Any contouring done beforehand was asked to be removed, as it was grounds for disqualification of the contestant. Only half an hour was given for the make-up, in which the beauticians had to display their talents and dexterity.
The judges were Mehtab Rashdi and Rohana Iqbal, president of Pakistan Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (PHABA). According to Rohana, it was a commendable effort on the part of the experienced beauticians. First position went to Naureen, while Angie and Ruby bagged the second and third position, respectively.
Shama Abdullah was the backbone of the show. The basic reason behind the whole affair was to give confidence to the novices in the field. The evening ended with a delectable dinner.
