A chilly evening with the stars

By Atif Khan

It was an extremely cold and dark night as chilling winds blew in from the Arabian Sea. But that was hardly enough to stop the glitterati of Karachi from donning their glamourous best and coming out in droves to the launch show of ARY Digital’s latest drama serials.

The function was held on the lawns of a local hotel. However, curiously enough, the whole evening was an open-air affair, not the best of settings considering the seemingly sub-zero temperatures.

The proceedings started late (one wonders if it is even worth mentioning this tired tradition anymore), but once the evening kicked off, it proved to be quite something as the stars did their thing. The two masters of ceremony were the hyper-kinetic Fakhr-e-Alam (who seems to have lost a bit of steam) and the dame from Lahore, Maria Wasti, who, by the way, was among the number of stars who were in a strap-suspended dress.

Though initially billed as an Eid celebration, it essentially proved to be the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the two serials in question. The first was Nabeel’s Waada. This serial is the actor’s directorial debut. Among the star-lit cast that he has assembled for the serial, the roll-call includes Sania Saeed, Talat Hussain, Uzma Gilani and Rubina Ashraf.

The other serial was Afreen Baig’s Kiya yehi pyaar hai?, a love story about a woman who struggles for her place in society, while trying to find true love. Afreen managed to grab some leading names for her cast, including a couple of Lollywood regulars. Moammar Rana, Sana, Ayesha Khan and Noman Ejaz are among the lead players.

Along with the star casts of the two serials, there were also other social butterflies of the entertainment world present including Javed Sheikh and Aijaz Aslam, though it looked like the latter probably had to catch the next bus to another function, for he made a brief appearance.

Among those who serenaded the crowd were Ali Haider, who performed before his first post-scandal audience. After two numbers, Haroon followed with Mehbooba, which had the crowd clapping along merrily. Hadiqa Kiani, who is busy putting together her much anticipated new album, made an appearance as well.

By the time the event was only two hours old, the chilly sea wind had created an environment worthy of making popsicles in the open. And yet, the stars frolicked freely in their bare minimums. Amazing! Somehow, Sania’s clothes seemed more in sync with the weather of the evening. She was content with making sure she didn’t catch a cold, rather than making the crowd drool.

In all a fine evening, yet one sincerely felt like having a word with the person who had the brilliant idea of seating guests in an open-air lawn in freezing temperatures!
