Old is gold

The Madar-i-Millat awards were recently held, on Christmas Eve 2003 to be exact, at Karachi’s Hindu Gymkhana. The awards were given to high achievers from different walks of life, in various disciplines. Amongst the most prominent were Mehdi Hasan for music, Asma Jehangir for human rights, Gulgee for art, Zeba and Mohammad Ali for films, Mirza Khursheed Masood for product photography etc. The venue was bedecked with diyas and mogra flowers, which made the place look like a scene straight from an old romantic.

It was an evening where the new generation paid tribute to the leaders who paved the way for them. Khushbakht Shujaat hosted the programme, and as usual, did a graceful job. The award ceremony was followed by a fashion show that focused on the lifestyle of Madar-i-Millat, where designer Moazzam Abbasi displayed his creative skills by designing an entire collection influenced by the personality of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah. The collection basically consisted of Parsi saris with puffed sleeves, ghararas with short shirts and shalwar kameez designed in the style of the ’40s, in light blue, green and pink shades. Premiere models displayed the pieces. The hair and make-up was done by Saima and Huma, who did a good job of making up the models in the style reminiscent of Ms Jinnah.

The fashion show was followed by an elaborate dinner and ghazal night, which featured Gul Bahar Bano. One wishes that more such programmes are presented in the future so that the memory of such towering figures from our history remains fresh in the minds of today’s generation.
