Kill Bill

Quentin Tarantino is certainly one hell of a kung-fu movie geek. Kill Bill is certain to grab your attention, if only for its aggressively brutal bloodbaths and inside references to movie trivia.

Uma Thurman is a woman with no name who is known only as ‘The Bride,’ since she was found nearly dead on her wedding day. In the following chapter, Thurman’s character is revealed as an assassin who left her death-dealing camaraderie for love. Unfortunately, opting out isn’t as easy as getting in. The scene cuts to four years later, when The Bride awakens from her coma and goes out for revenge against those who did her in.

There isn’t much to offer in terms of story here, but after a long hiatus, Tarantino’s return to the big screen is welcome.

The print available is an absolute wreck, but just as well, this gave some insight on the preview audience who put their hands together whenever veteran names like Sonny Chiba or David Carradine came on screen, or are awed whenever The Bride slits people in two. It’s a violent sight and it may not be for everyone, but will anyone in Tarantino’s fandom really care? —Mohammad Kamran Jawaid

The Rundown

In The Rundown, wrestling sensation The Rock stars as Beck, a mild mannered man who doesn’t like trouble. But dealing with trouble is what he is hired to do, for he is a collector of bad debts, making sure people pay up what they owe. Our man simply relies on his wits, a “let’s get this over with” attitude and devastating physical prowess. And his latest job requires the best of all three abilities.

Beck has to leave the urban jungle of Los Angles and travel deep into the Amazon to retrieve Travis (Sean William Scott), the spoilt son of an underworld kingpin who has been missing following a prolonged vacation. But a simple job soon turns complicated as both Beck and Travis have to run for safety, dodging monkeys, a group of rebels, the army of a crazy gold mining tyrant, hidden traps and everything else the jungle throws at them. Of course it’s Beck who deals with most of the problems, while Travis remains a keen spectator.

Though no safari adventure, The Rundown has all the Rock’s trademark moves and all the wit and humour that Sean William Scott has to offer. —Atif Khan
