Jewels of yore

By K.H.

An event that literally dazzled everyone present with its glitter, as well as with the bevy of beauties that presented it, was a rare jewellery show brought recently to this part of the world by a leading European company. Displaying its widely acclaimed antique collection that was once owned by the rulers of the subcontinent to their customers and the press, the selection contained pieces made by the jewellery company specifically for the princes during the 1920s. They had far from modest requests, commissioning the company for ornate ceremonial necklaces to precious clocks and even accessories such as gold plated cigarette holders.

Commenting on the display, the managing director of Cartier Middle East said, “We are very pleased to bring this precious collection of jewellery to the UAE. This is the first time the collection has been brought here as heritage and cultural initiatives are very important to our customers.”

Many of the modern-day pieces in the collection take inspiration from the various eras and cultures, mixing past and present, East and West. Models displayed the jewellery sets showing the different styles and precious stones in the collection. Each of these six designs, recreated the sensibilities of the era with the ethos of the jewellery. Over the years, the company has bought back many of the historic pieces that form this range to secure just one of the many themes that represent their jewellery work from the last 150 years.

This collection was recently shown in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
