In every locality of Karachi there are small beauty salons that may not be known throughout the city, but are quite popular within their area. A bridal show was organized at a local auditoriumin in order to give these establishments a chance to share the limelight and gain exposure.
It was more of a competition in which 18 salons participated, out of which the best ten were to be selected by a panel of judges. There were other events as well such as a fantasy make-up show, a concert and an award distribution ceremony for the team of Aag Aur Paani, a serial that has completed 50 episodes. People from all walks of life showed up and after a good couple of hours the hosts Ayaz Khan and Javeria Abbasi came onstage to calm the uneasy audience. Ayaz’s quips held the audience’s interest. Javeria was not able to keep pace with the seasoned artist and often failed to come up with a prompt, witty response.
The show started with the performances of some new singers, along with some old faces. The first to come was Aftab Khan, Ayaz’s brother, who performed quite well and was followed by Tayyaba and Umair, the sibling duo, Faisal Latif and Seher, a newcomer with a style similar to Hadiqa Kiani’s.
After the brides came the best part of the show. Moin Akhtar was invited to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. He performed a small skit sending the crowd into fits of laughter
While the greenhorns performed, the panel of judges consisting of Rohana Iqbal, Angie Marshall, Leslie Gray and Rizwana Khan went backstage to decide the ten best brides. After the performance, the brides sashayed down the catwalk in shimmering attire. As they were not professional models, they were not able to carry themselves onstage in the appropriate manner. Some of the outfits were decent, while others weren’t up to the standard. It was a similar case with the make-up. Loud whispers could be heard as the onlookers commented on the brides.
After the brides came the best part of the show. Moin Akhtar was invited to receive the lifetime achievement award, after which he performed a small skit sending the crowd into fits of laughter.
The musical segment of the programme was launched by Mizmaar, with Najam Shiraz following soon after. They only sang a couple of songs and left, leaving the audience craving for more. Najam was not very happy, as he wasn’t allowed to sing live.
Meanwhile, backstage the brides were getting uneasy in their heavy outfits and to top it off, their make-up had started melting! The judges were also impatient to leave as it was way past midnight. After Najam’s performance they were called upon to announce the ten best brides. Most of the people left after the announcement without waiting to see the fantasy show, which should have been presented earlier as it was a very musical segment and would have most certainly been popular with the audience.
To celebrate the golden jubilee of Aag Aur Paani, a serial aired on Indus Vision, its team was invited to receive awards from NTV. Kazim Pasha presented the awards.
The show ended late at night and only a few people stayed on till the end. Some people commented that the show was good but due to the time, they weren’t able to enjoy it. There were certain flaws which, if they had been avoided, would have made the show much more interesting. Firstly, the newcomers were given too long to perform. Secondly, too many singers were invited. Since there was so much variety, two novices and two veteran singers would have been more than enough. In a nutshell, it was a nice effort by New Talent Vision (NTV) and the concept was good.
