Tragedy strikes Lollywood

By Mohsin Jafar

Hers may be an unknown name for those who are not associated with the film industry, but for the Lollywood crowd, Nagina Khanum was a recognized personality. Her brutal murder, along with that of seven other people, at her residence, has created a sense of insecurity among the tinsel town people, especially female artists. It happened on September 24. Others killed in the gory incident were Nagina Khanum’s daughter, her two grandsons, her cousin, her driver, a maid and a Pashto film director who was staying at her house.

Fifty-five-year-old Nagina Khanum joined the film industry as a singer 35 years ago. She recorded more than 130 songs for different films. Most of them were in Pashto, as it was her mother tongue. She belonged to Muhalla Khizar Khawani, Peshawar. Nagina started her career as a singer and later was introduced as an actress by director S. M. Yousuf in his film Aulad.

Who killed Nagina Khanum and her family? Police are trying to find answers, but till now they have not reached any conclusion. According to some reports, criminals belonging to Charsadda are responsible for the murders. The police say the victims were killed in cold blood by experienced criminals who shot them in their heads

She acted in more than 100 films, most of them being in Pashto. She had starred in the Urdu movie Janbaz in which Mohammed Ali played the hero. Arguably, her best performance was in the Punjabi picture Mangti, in which she also sang a couple of songs. Her first Pashto movie was Yousuf Khan, Sherbano. Her last movie as an actress was Syed Noor’s Mehndi Waley Hath, which was released two years ago.

Nagina Khanum also produced movies in Pashto. Her only Urdu movie as a producer was Jeenay Do, which Hasan Askari directed. She was planning to produce another Pashto movie, and that was the reason that director Nasir Raza Khan, also murdered in the incident, was staying in her house. She was planning to introduce her second son Ali Nawaz in the movie as a hero, but her dream was unfulfilled. Nagina Khanum’s eldest son Mohammed Nawaz Khan is a known actor who has worked in a number of movies, drama serials and videos. His best known music video is Abrarul Haq’s Jut Charrya Kacheyri, in which he played the villain.

Nagina Khanum was a controversial figure in local showbiz circles. She was running an academy in a local studio named ‘Nagina Cultural and Dance Academy.’ Famous heroine Saima was introduced to the film industry by this academy, but the institution was looked down upon owing to its suspicious activities. A number of police cases were registered against Nagina Khanum, but her influential friends always came to her rescue in times of trouble. On the other hand, according to most of the girls of Lollywood, she was a humane figure. She would always help those who’d approach her. She was a philanthropist and helped the needy. Nagina was planning to migrate to Canada where her elder daughter is residing.

Who killed Nagina Khanum and her family? Police are trying to find answers, but till now they have not reached any conclusion. According to some reports, criminals belonging to Charsadda are responsible for the murders. The police say the victims were killed in cold blood by experienced criminals who shot them in their heads. Three persons have been arrested so far and investigations are underway. The cause behind the killings was not announced, but according to reports, the criminals from Charsadda wanted one of their girls back, who was living under the protection of Nagina Khanum and in this regard, they had a dispute with her.

According to the police, the case should be solved in a couple of weeks, but the point to be noted is that the police have never solved a case in which a celebrity has been murdered. Sultan Rahi, Nadira, Naina, Marvi and Naushaba Maryam’s murderers are still at large!
