Formal black is a dress code better suited to evenings, but such was not the case at the hair show held recently at a local hotel. The event was organized by a multinational.
Aaminah Haq was the first to sashay down the ramp in long raven black locks (extensions) and a Moazzam Abbasi creation, followed by Sunita Marshall and ZQ. Keeping in line with the theme, the clothes and embellishments were done in deep black, with full, flowing skirts and short sleeveless tops. Although some of the fashion editors in the audience did not seem too pleased with Moazzam’s efforts, the rest of the crowd comprising the beauticians of Karachi and the multinational top brass were quite impressed.
Among the guests present was a spirited executive who took the liberty of taking jibes during his formal-informal address. However, a few words from his side made some in the audience slightly uncomfortable, taking offence at his remarks, specially when he labelled the task of beautifying Pakistani women as tough!
Also present was the pleasant and soft-spoken Roohana Iqbal Khan, President of the Pakistan Hairdressers and Beauticians Association. She spoke well and made sense, dispelling myths about hair care and most of all, highlighted the fact that the average Pakistani woman is quite ignorant when it comes to proper grooming.
Backstage, it was learnt that quite a few things went amiss when a certain well-known catwalk queen made a dramatic exit on account of some misunderstanding about media coverage and payment, but up front, everything went smoothly and her absence was hardly noticed.
