Wedding bells are still far for Amna Haq. Viewers can see her in a wedding dress, only in TV plays. Last year, Amna had announced that she would be marrying by the end of the year and after marriage she might not be acting anymore. The latest news is that she has partially agreed to work in a movie, which is being produced by beautician Mussarat Misbah and directed by Farouq Mengal. Amna Haq has refused many such offers in the past, but Mussarat Misbah is a close friend, so she finally agreed to do a flick. The shooting will start in a couple of months.
But what about her marriage plans? When a journalist contacted her home in Lahore, her grandmother revealed that her marriage date was not fixed and news regarding last year’s marriage plan was wrong. In these days one can see Amna in the role of a miserable wife in the serial Mehndi. Did she learn her lesson from the play? One can only guess.— M.J.
Midair turbulence
London police let Courtney Love off the hook recently after arresting her for allegedly being abusive to a Virgin Atlantic flight crew. The 38-year-old hell kitten was released after spending almost 10 hours in custody. Cops busted the rocker at Heathrow Airport when she stepped off a plane from Los Angeles. An airline spokesman said Love was disruptive and verbally abused the cabin crew during the flight. Sources claimed the grunge queen lost it when an aide who was in economy class was barred from joining her in first.
“Courtney hit the roof and began yelling and swinging at (the) staff,” one source said. Cops said Love had refused to sit and fasten her seat belt. After receiving a radio message from the plane’s captain, police escorted the singer to a van. Brushing off one officer who tried to cover her face with a scarf, Love waved at photographers. A rep for the celeb acknowledged she “uttered a profanity,” but said the incident was “highly exaggerated.”—Rush and Molloy
Enough is enough
It was a harrowing experience that evening for the creative group that was heading towards a farm near the Super Highway for a Basant party. Enjoying jokes during the long drive, Rizwan Beyg, Imran Qureshi, Amir and Huma Adnan were stopped at a road connecting the C.O.D. one, along with other cars by the police. At first the impression was that traffic had been halted for a VIP and his entourage about to pass. Soon the wailing of sirens were heard and then began passing one police mobile after another followed by a dozen ambulances which were in turn followed by a truck and vans carrying angry, shouting friends and relatives of the deceased. One of the policemen near Amir Adnan’s car hissed in urgency to the drivers to switch off the car lights and all the policemen from the four parked police mobiles got out, pointing their guns towards the vans, ready to retaliate release if they started shooting.
It soon dawned on the designers that they were witnessing the procession of the unfortunate victims who had been shot in Malir earlier in the evening, and had got themselves stuck in a very tense situation. If there was shooting, they, along with the other car passengers, would be the victims of a crossfire. Fortunately, there was no incident and the gun-toting cowboys lowered their weapons and went back into their mobiles, while the designers turned their vehicle and went back home, no longer in the mood to celebrate anything.—K.H.
The Neeson report
Liam Neeson has angered some children’s advocates by taking on the film role of controversial sex researcher Dr Alfred Kinsey.
“In a time when we are reeling from pedophile abusers, for a person like Liam Neeson to portray a man who has (allegedly) celebrated pedophilia is sending a message of approval,” Judith Reisman said recently. Reisman, author of two books critical of Kinsey, has written a letter to the star, asking him to bail out of the movie, to be directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
Reisman claims there’s substantial evidence that the author of the ground-breaking Kinsey Report abused the children in his experiments. A spokeswoman for the Kinsey Institute at the University of Indiana, argues: “Alfred Kinsey was in no way a pedophile, and he did not employ pedophiles as co-workers.” She adds that she hopes the movie, which is also due to star Laura Linney and Ian McKellan, “will portray Dr Kinsey in all his genius.” —Rush and Molloy
