Most of the wide-eyed innocent looking females I have met have turned out to be quite the antitheses of the cherubic vision they conjured. Sunita Marshal was not one of them. If this scribe pens all the names she boldly took and spoke truthfully about she would have to choose a different career. Most models would have been shy of giving answers that one could use as fertilizer. This one of Preeto fame, did not mince words.
“My aunt Angie Marshal who is a beautician is the one who encouraged me to take up modelling and it so happened that once when I was visiting Saima Rasheed’s beauty salon she asked me to do a shoot for her and I complied. That was the beginning for me.”
Sunita is younger than she looks. She was a second year student when her first shoot was printed in a weekly magazine and is currently trying to complete her B.Com.
“I am a lazy person,” she giggles. “I wake up after 11 in the morning, have breakfast, watch television and sometimes study. I have enrolled in a college but I prefer to take private tuitions at home instead.”
The reason she gives for her aversion to going to college makes one wonder how she manages the career of her choice.
“I have studied in all girls’ schools and the college is co-ed. I was not very comfortable there. So I stopped going after the first week.”
Hardly has any other model gained the amount of popularity Sunita did after her appearance in Abrar-ul-Haq’s single Preeto. She admits that the masses have only recently started to recognize her. She happened to be in Lahore recently and says that the girls would point and exclaim recognizing the lovable Preeto. To her, the most surprising aspect was that they knew her by name.
“My first video was the Sukhbir and Shehzad Roy number being shown these days, but Preeto happened to be released much earlier.”
One will once again get to see her in Fakhr-e-Alam’s Husn walon, to be aired shortly starring a host of other top models of the country. According to this straight-talking young lady, video-making can be a harrowing experience since directors are usually disorganized and rarely think about the trouble they cause the models when they are made to wait all day in curlers and make-up.
“I’m known to be punctual and if I have a shoot at six in the morning I will be ready. However, on a number of occasions I have had to wait till the next day for my turn in front of the camera.”
This waif-like, unassuming girl has worked for all the big names in the Pakistani fashion scene and appreciates the talents of Rizwan Beyg, Nomi Ansari and Usman Dittu. This answer was cleverly fashioned to encompass the senior most and the recent raves. As for the photographers that can make or break a model’s career by a mere click of the camera, Sunita says, “Some top names have managed to make me look horrible when the results were printed. One cannot do much about that but through trial and error. I now pick shoots that have a photographer of my choice who manages to capture me in my best angles.”
When she is frankly told that one of the videos she was in just doesn’t do justice to her ability as a model, she agrees candidly. Having had the seeds sown, doesn’t she want to act sometime in serials in the near future as is the case with all models?
“I have already acted in two plays,” comes the surprising reply. “They have both been a major disappointment.”
It seems that Sunita desperately needs to make some intelligent choices in her career if she intends to bank on her success that, as we well know, can be fleeting.
“I have been offered films by people who I know are intelligent enough to make a good movie. The people in advertising who know me quite well are considering making films and if a worthwhile offer comes my way I will be seen on the silver screen.”
It takes a certain amount of cunning to excel in any section of show business and although Sunita has an ample amount of charisma, she needs to make some smart choices if she intends to get to the top.
