STAR BUZZ: Reema’s new business

Reema, along with her family, has once again gone to USA for the holidays. This is her fourth trip in a single year. Everyone knows that Reema is the most sensible actress of the lot in Lollywood. She is aware that after 13 years on the silver screen, her innings is about to be over, thus her interest in new avenues. According to the mole, she is establishing her business in the States, which is a chain of restaurants in the main cities.

It is also said that Saud is helping her out in this connection. Saud has a blue passport and his family is comfortably settled there. There is also a rumour that Reema and Saud have gone through a paper marriage so that she can obtain a green card for her business. Both have denied that they have done any such thing but in showbiz, denial, says the grapevine, is also a way of affirmation.—M.J.

The stars with ‘brains’

Michael Jackson is hoping to scare audiences (on purpose) with a film. First, he threatened to play Edgar Allan Poe in The Nightmare of Edgar Allan Poe, but he’s now said to be planning to reprise his Thriller shtick in a feature-length werewolf flick. With his music career looking a bit less than Invincible, Jackson may sink about $20 million into the film project. ‘The Gloved One’ would produce and star in Wolfed for his Neverland Pictures outfit, playing a 17th-century shoemaker’s son who turns into a monster after making a deal with the Devil.

Russell Crowe plans to leave Australia’s Sydney University a piece of his beautiful mind. University officials say the 38-year-old actor has pledged to donate his brain. Meanwhile, Crowe’s reps are shooting down talk that he will be putting a coonskin cap on his noggin. According to Brit reports, Ron Howard has been courting Crowe for the role of Davy Crockett in his remake of The Alamo. Crowe’s agent says it’s not happening.—Rush and Molloy

Karawan Karachi is back

Karawan Karachi is back again with a new topic — ‘the empowerment of women.’ Having putting Karachi back on the map, so to speak, last year, as a city of lights and not guns, Karawan projected the heritage buildings successfully, conveying the message that they need to be protected as they are a national treasure.

At the inauguration dinner arranged in the gardens of the Governor House, recently, Yasmeem Lari, the chairman of the Heritage Foundation spoke of the events arranged for the year. The chief guest Atiya Inayatullah, Minister for Population Welfare, gave a very articulate speech on the women’s issue and the role the government was playing. Then followed a very interesting panel discussion consisting of Dr Sadiqa Jaffery, Human Rights activist Zia Awan, President of First Women’s Bank, Zarin Aziz and Atiya Inayatullah. Shaiyanne Malik rounded up the evening’s programmes with a detailed account of the past events of last year.—K.H.

Hollywood happenings

Gwyneth Paltrow swears she doesn’t think Aaron Eckhart stinks. According to one of the British tabs, the actress “loathed” her onscreen lover in Possession and complained about his hygiene. Paltrow’s rep tells us that she and Eckhart “don’t necessarily socialize,” but “they got along fine.” ...

Ed Norton doesn’t deem billionaire Bill Gates cheap just because he bets small. “You hear about Gates going to Las Vegas and playing $3 and $6 poker — I totally understand that,” says Norton, who learned about the game while training for his role in Rounders. Norton told Webster Hall curator Baird Jones at the premiere of Mr. Deeds that “poker is about the bluff, reading your opponent, knowing when to fold, the ego of it. It is not just about money.”—Rush and Molloy
