From telefilm to serial

By Saima Salman

A beautiful bungalow in Garden East is bustling with activity. Tucked away among trees and bylanes, like a forgotten treasure, this peaceful location is where Yasir Akhter is filming his latest tele-venture. Yasir the pop singer is again wearing the mask of director, his face is inscrutable as he discusses lines with his young cast and simultaneously shouts instructions at his crew. Jaaen Kahan Arman is a venture that Yasir has discussed not once but many times with writer Peerzada Salman. Yasir believes it saves time and gives him the opportunity to tighten all loose ends concerning the script before the drama actually goes on location.

To find a category under which to fit this forthcoming series is difficult, for on the one hand there is heated action coupled with soft romance and then there are lighter moments.

Arman is the main character played by Yasir himself, a young man who runs away from home to save his life from his stepmother and stepbrothers who attempt to kill him since he has inherited a large amount of money from his late mother. Throughout the serial he will be wandering from town to town looking for a place that will serve as a safe haven; and since Arman is a friendly, sensitive, ‘save the world from its woes’ kind of character, at every stop he will unwillingly be entangled in the lives of the people around him. The main character will encounter a new set of people after every five to six episodes and a fresh story will begin.

The first episode begins with two young girls sitting opposite each other in the courtyard of a rundown house. The wet mosaic floor gives the scene a real yet surrealistic touch. A broken bicycle is propped against one corner and the bricked entrance belies the modern outfits of the girls on set. Yasir is not satisfied with the floor and the scene is stopped to water it more to make it just right for the situation. It is early evening and the eerie light from the sky mixes with the spotlights to give the scene a subdued and relaxed effect. Gul, a head strong young man played by Ali Afzal is not home. His sister Sophia (newcomer Tabassum), opens the door to their neighbour Laila, a girl in love with Gul. Sophia is having an affair with Peeru, and Gul is suspicious of their liaison. Arman becomes a mutual friend of the couple and respects Gul at the same time. He knows how volatile the situation will become if Gul finds out but he is unable to dissuade the couple from their trysts on the roof of the housing complex that he is currently living in. Gul’s suspicions are confirmed and he verbally threatens Peeru of the dire consequences.

Peeru played by Mubashir, disappears and Gul is taken into custody. Arman proves to be the balm for Gul’s wounds and helps Sophia erase the past.

The storyline has been kept simple so that there is room to play with visuals. Yasir Akhter has experimented with camera movements and angles in a new way. He has come up with a serial after a long time. Jaaen Kahan Arman will soon be aired on one of the local satellite channels.
