REVIEWS PREVIEWS: Wake-up call!

Thorny, Rabbit, Mac and Foster are passable Vermont State Troopers. Stationed in the boonies on the Canadian border, they spend the bulk of their time playfully toying with speeders and taking impounded sports cars for spins on the open highway. When they’re not on the road, they try to stay on the good side of their fatherly mentor, Captain O’Hagan, and avoid their tactless, thick-necked compatriot, officer Rod Farva. All in all, they find their work to be pleasantly unchallenging. However, once the state targets their low volume station for a potential budget slash, the guys decide to buckle down to impress the higher ups. Things look bleak until, unexpectedly, the State Troopers’ new “by the book” attitude uncovers a drug smuggling operation. Sensing salvation, the Troopers race the clock to crack the ring and save their jobs. But they aren’t the only ones in the hunt.

Super Troopers is a film people would like to watch for the weekend. With comedy and some spectacular action the movie is worth the time and money.—Nazia Mirza

Space boy to the rescue

Jimmy Neutron — boy genius is the story of 10-year-old Jimmy whose IQ is exceptionally high — aided with an extraordinary imagination. Always creating gadgets to make life more interesting, Jimmy has a great sense of fun and adventure, even though his inventions tend to get him into trouble, quite often. But when aliens start kidnapping every parent in the world, Jimmy sets his inventions to use. Armed and ready, Jimmy and his buddies, his trusty robotic dog, Goddard, his best friend Carl Wheezer and his rival Cindy Vortex, soar to the stars and back in one incredible and zany afternoon. Ultimately, it’s Jimmy’s genius that saves every kid (friend or foe) from becoming an orphan by the detestable aliens.

The film is based on a regularly featured cartoon by the same name. Besides having its funny moments, Jimmy Neutron — Boy genius is a wild ride for the mechanical nerds of society.—N.M.

The vampires are here

The so called sequel of Tom Cruise’s old hit Interview with the Vampire, Queen of the Damned stars Aaliyah, the late pop diva who died in a plane crash before the release of what turned out to be her first and only film.

The film is based on Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, and is the story of Lestat de Lioncourt, a vampire who, after decades of hibernation, is awakened by the sounds of modern rock music. He joins a band and makes his own lyrics that contain secrets of the vampire world, making all the vampires stand up against him. In-between word comes that Akasha (the queen of all vampires) has also risen and is coming after Lestat to make him her (reluctant) husband.

With plenty of vampire blood, the movie has its bold and weak points, but is a sure thriller for the boys. Girls and kids beware, for though it’s a PG rated film there are a lot of blood-curdling scenes.—Khurrum Anis
