The month of March had activities focussing on women and their roles in various fields of life. Media Women Publishers and Journalists Organization too, paid, homage to media women by holding an awards ceremony, acknowledging the contribution of women who have highlighted the issues of women through media. Masuda M. Ahmad, chairperson of the organization said that it was for the first time that an event of this kind was held and hoped that it becomes an annual affair.
The Federal Minister of Information, Nisar Memon was the chief guest. Exceptionally late, the chief guest entered the hall when Zia Mohyeddin, who had also flown in especially from Lahore, was at the rostrum. The latter maintaining his hallmark eloquence expressed his displeasure at this practice of late arrivals, but said it in such a polite way that the audience and the chief guest were not offended. As the show revolved around the media, it was an evening graced by several showbiz personalities, mainly from KTV. Perveen Qadri, Secretary Women Development, Government of Sindh, was the guest of honour on the occasion.
There was a special ‘Woman of Vision’ award reserved for a person who has excelled in promoting the cause of under-privileged women. Sultana Siddiqui, the accomplished producer, walked up to the stage amid thunderous applause
Like the usual (sickening) practice, the programme kicked off late and had its share of lengthy speeches. There were eight awards to be given for excellence, to those women associated with print media, electronic media, public relations, advertising, arts, film making. The committee had a difficult task choosing as there were many competitors.
“I dedicate my award to all those women living in interior Sindh who have yet to experience freedom which is just a dream for them,” said Noor-ul-Huda Shah, the writer who has always highlighted the oppression of women in her serials such as Jungle, Aasman Tak Deewar and Marvi. The other award winners were Zohra Karim, editor She Magazine, Muneeza Hashmi, Managing Director PTV, Talat Tayabji, Director Marketing and PR, AKUH, Seema Tahir Khan, Chairperson Interflow Communications, Nargis Zaidi, senior correspondent of The News, Mehreen Illahi, Director Majmua Art Gallery and Nayyar Mehmood, incharge, production. The entries were invited from all major cities of the country.

As Mehtab Akbar Rashidi, anchor of the show, announced the name Sultana Siddiqui, the accomplished producer walked up to the stage amid thunderous applause. She was visibly overwhelmed with emotions on receiving such recognition.
Tina Sani had prepared a song on a beautiful poem for Sultana, but the crooner’s repeated requests for just a few minutes silence fell on the deaf ears of the restless audience as she sat to sing it. Ali Haider and Salman Ahmed who were to perform as well, had to leave without performing due to the programme’s extended time as they had to perform in concerts.
