STAR BUZZ: Shows... ad nauseum

Recently one got to see mega musical shows on a very regular basis, so much so that someone was heard quipping “they’re a dime a dozen these days.” What with Valentines’ Day, Basant and Eid coming together in such close proximity, the only way that the jialay people in this country know how to celebrate is through dance and music, with artists literally hopping from one show to another. And, of course, not to be left out of the celebrations our channels recorded these programmes, one and all. Thus the viewers got to see all of them through the idiot box and by the end of it most were proficient in the songs, jokes and dances presented by the performers — and sick to death of them, too.

What one would like to ask the artists is why they had to repeat their songs at all the shows in Karachi and Lahore. Is it that they have very few hits or are they dense in the heads not to realize that performances on such occasions are recorded. And don’t our comedians have new jokes to tell and our Meeras and Minis somthing new to present. It became quite a farce at the end. Having fun is a good thing but not when it becomes ad nauseum. Do try to come up with something fresh next time we celebrate somthing, and how about some Urdu songs as well, for a change. Are you paying heed, you showbiz people?— K.H

Big diamond, but still just friends

With the money Matthew Perry makes from Friends, he could certainly afford to plunk down $45,000 for his girlfriend’s diamond ring. But don’t jump to matrimonial conclusions just yet. The actor was snapped leaving Barneys in Manhattan with his girlfriend, makeup artist Andi O’Reilly, by his side and flashing a sizable solitaire on her engagement finger. But a rep for Perry, who has also dated Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Hurley, insisted that the two are not about to get married. Meanwhile, Perry and co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox Arquette and David Schwimmer are said to be preparing for a new round of salary talks. Each of them makes around $750,000 per episode. They’re said to want $250,000 more — to match the $1 million-plus paychecks that Frasier stars Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce are said to have squeezed out of NBC. —Rush and Molloy

Tribute to Nazia Hasan

Nazia and Zoheb Hasan were inseparable names in the past and Nazia’s illness and tragic death are still fresh in peoples mind. Zoheb has organized a special tribute on March 9 showcasing the life of Nazia and re-enacting her hits on stage. The programme will also feature a live performance by Zoheb and Biddu, the British-based music producer who has agreed to come to Karachi for the event. Local singers and bands will also perform, with the proceeds being donated to charities.

Nazia became famous in her teens and in 1980 introduced pop music through her super hit cassette Disco Dewanee, and became one of the best known Asian artists in the world. She received the National Youth Award from the Ministry of Culture in 1985 and is being conferred upon, posthumously, the Pride of Performance award by the President of Pakistan this month.—K.H.

Deductive reasoning

A Florida FBI agent was one of the first people to find out that Madonna gal pal Ingrid Casares was pregnant, according to a new book that chronicles the life of her former business partner, Chris Paciello, a Staten Island street thug who became the nightlife king of Miami’s South Beach. According to Mob Over Miami, written by New York Daily News police beat reporter Michele McPhee, FBI agent Michael Leveroc went to Casares’ luxury Miami Beach high-rise in March 2000 to search for $50,000 “secreted in a shoebox.” At the time, the feds suspected Casares had evaded pa paying taxes on the thousands of dollars Paciello paid her to be his sidekick in South Beach hot spots Liquid, Joia and Bar Room, McPhee reports. As agents searched Casares’ pad, they found it littered with baby books. —Rush and Molloy
