STAR BUZZ: Afraid of competition

Cine-goers have often wondered why Syed Noor has never taken Shaan opposite Saima in his ‘prestigious’ projects and why he insists on taking Momi or even Babar (like in Mehndi waley hath)? Well, the answer is as simple as... lights, camera and action!

Shaan is a very dominating figure on screen. He delves so deeply in his character slogging even inconsequential roles (watch Asoo Billa) that his costars end up underplaying their roles. Saima is a consummate actress but when she is opposite Shaan, he devours her in one gulp (watch Baghi). Since Noor’s movies have capacity for only one strong character, which is Saima, he has to make do with actors like Momi, who takes acting lessons between shots, or Babar, who is grateful for ‘just one more movie’! So just imagine what must have happened in Shaan’s latest home production, Moosa Khan. On screen, of course!—J.D.

Bing’s sting hurts Liz

Like sand through an hourglass, so comes another development in the soap-opera lives of Elizabeth Hurley and Stephen Bing. The actress has declared that she was wounded by Bing’s claim that he didn’t know whether he was the father of her child and that their relationship was never “exclusive.”

“I’m deeply distraught by Stephen Bing publicly declaring that he hadn’t been in an ‘exclusive relationship’ with me. This was the first I had heard of this, and the implications are very painful, especially as I am shortly to give birth to his child.

“I loved Stephen enormously during the 18 months we were together. Contrary to erroneous reports, we were still very much happy and together when I discovered I was pregnant. I was completely loyal and faithful to Stephen throughout this time as, indeed, he assured me he was to me.” Hurley’s statement came in response to one that Bing, 35, a Hollywood film producer and real estate heir, made in which he pledged to be a “responsible parent” if he is the father of the baby, which is due in April. Bing had no reply recently, but according to reports, he dropped Hurley for Brenda Swanson, a 39-year-old actress whose film career includes the role of ‘Hooker No. 3’ in the low-budget movie Ice House.—Rush and Molloy

Pushto films in demand

Many Pakistani illegal Pushto film video cum producers are getting more and more orders from Afghanistan for Pakistan Pushto films after the changing scenario in the country. Some people are making copies of uncensored and vulgar video movies inside Afghanistan.

Film distributors in Pakistan are trying to get in touch with Kabul’s entertainement section. Many are smuggling their box office hit films, cashing in on the situation. The local satellite dish makers have also jumped in the foray. They were doing business seceretly in the past but are now selling it in the open market. In Saddar many second-hand TV dealers are exporting ‘used-TV sets’ in good prices to Kabul and importing dry fruits in return. Businesses, moral or immoral, is booming for the experienced people on both sides of the border.—MFM

Carey on, troops!

No one perks up military fatigues like Mariah Carey. Wearing a daringly unzipped uniform, the diva carried on the tradition of Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe and other sexy morale-boosters by entertaining peacekeeping troops in Kosovo. Carey, who swooped in on a Chinook helicopter, admitted the trip was a “unnerving at the beginning.

The helicopter ride flipped me out a little bit — I ain’t going to lie.” But after she landed and was hoisted shoulder high by soldiers, she said she felt “very safe and protected.”

Carey visited three U.S. camps in Kosovo — trudging through mud, posing for group photos, pausing only to have her hair fixed.—Rush and Molloy
