Triangle of relationship Hans Petter Moland’s compelling Aberdeen, stars Lena Headey (Kaisa) as an ambitious young attorney whose life unexpectedly starts unravelling at the time she receives an important promotion from her large London firm. Her mother Helen (Charlotte Rampling), who lives in Aberdeen, Scotland, and with whom Kaisa is not close, has asked her to travel to Norway and bring back her father Tomas (Stellan Skarsgard).
Helen has just been diagnosed with advanced terminal cancer and she wants to die happy by marrying Tomas, who walked out on her and Kaisa 15 years ago. Kaisa is courting disaster in trying to deal with a father who not only is a drunk but also has not seen or heard from her since he departed. At least she has his Oslo address.
Moland piles on the plot developments so thickly that for much of its duration, Aberdeen has an aura of contrivance that threatens to be unshakable but ultimately is overcome by the strength of his material and, the depth of his characterizations. By the time father and daughter come to the end of their catastrophic journey they have discovered the meaning of self-sacrifice and the need for redemption. But, with all the setbacks along the way, will they reach Helen’s bedside before it’s too late? An adult movie for the serious members of the family. —Atif Khan
Bad to the bones They say that every dog has its day, and so did Snoop Dogg. The gangasta rapper stars as Jimmy Bones in the latest Halloween flick Bones. The ghetto horror flick tells the story of a philanthropic black hood don who was betrayed and killed by his own allies. After twenty years, his ghost comes back to wreak revenge on those who killed him and to clean up his neighbourhood. Ornamented with some serious slang and special effects, the not-so-thrilling plot is supported with a great background score. Also starring the sultry Bianca Lawson, the plot involves a bunch of five ambitious young men who somehow got trapped in the evil web of the Jimmy Bone. With some loosely fixed loopholes, the movie is best for a Saturday night hangout. So grab your popcorn bag and chew up the ‘Bones’. —a.zee Usmani
