Television undoubtedly has become an essential part of our lives. Sharing moments of happiness and sorrow or seeking information, television is at our service with just a touch of the button. It also reflects the psyche of a nation and of the people who control it, whereas the personality of a director and scriptwriter is reflected in the production.
Festivals are occasions when usually the best offerings are shown. And this is exactly what we expect on our mini-screens this Eid — the best of Pakistani television productions.
PTV, Karachi Centre will be hosting live transmission this Eid. There were (at least) three ‘major’ shows recorded, the format of which still remains the same as every year. Artists were flown in from all parts of the country, the majority coming from Lahore. Then there are some comedy skits with reference to Eid.
The main shows recorded are for ARY, Channel-3 and PTV. Reet Sangeet, the show recorded for PTV network however stands out for its presentation and quality. It will be aired on Eid day. Hosted by Saleem Sheikh, the show includes many media personalities and stars, Zeba Bakhtiar, Noor, Jawad Ahmed, Naeem Abbass Rufi (with his “undefined hair-do), Haroon, Fakhr-e-Alam, Papu Samrat, Sadia Imam, Zulqarnain Haider and Hanif Raja are among the few. Anwar Maqsood pulled out minutes before the show started and Meera offered her last moment regrets “as she had not consulted her secretary and had other engagements.”
Scripted by young Ali Saleem and directed by Zaheer Khan, the show started with Jawad Ahmed’s performance. Bin teray kiya hai jina was followed by electric song Uchia Majaja that included Noor and other dancers who performed on it. A series of interviews and performances then followed. Fakhr-e-Alam presented two of his latest numbers; one definitely inspired by Adnan Sami’s Teri unchi shaan hai Mola.
The venue, an open area at a beachside hotel, may have been inappropriate due to the misty and humid weather, but the set and sitting arrangements were simple mind-blowing. However, the backdrop an open cornice area, could have been lit up more. The packed audience stayed late till the very end of the show.
Hanif Raja was the most impressive and came up with apt jokes and punchlines mostly aimed at the middle and upper-middle class of society that was present in the audience.
