How can designers contribute towards a cause? By arranging a fashion show, and that is exactly what Maria.B did. Wanting to contribute in some manner towards the Afghan refugees, Maria.B in collaboration with a local hotel exhibited her Paris Collection 2001 - exclusively for her foreign clientele - recently at Karachi. It was another attempt at condemning terrorism and promoting peace and harmony, at the same time providing entertainment to all present. The European Collection did not depict our culture, which was announced at the very outset. And a good thing too! Or else, people would have marvelled at the unwearability of some of the ensembles.
As lights were dimmed at the Marriot, the hosts, all eyes riveted towards the projection screens on stage, and images of anguished, enraged, torn, disintegrated Afghanis, resulted in a sadness amongst the audience in the hall. An atmosphere quite different from the festive mood that everyone was in a little while ago.
Soon after the speakers started blaring and a bedraggled figure stepped out on the ramp. A model dressed in sequined tatters - in scarlet - with hair going astray, depicted agony and she travelled the whole length of the ramp trudging and dragging her feet as if it was too much of an effort. Next was a figure of misery in black rags and a repetition of the former model’s steps.
However, rebirth and rejuvenation were not far off. Where there destruction nature takes it full course, resulting in death leading to rebirth, for life never stops. Rebirth in this case was a model dressed in a long green dress, with her torso encased in a green cage depicting a woman expecting, full of hope — hopeful of another new dawn, of a new era. The show pumped up immediately and shot up quite a few scales.
There was a parade of models depicting the generation-Xers. The models were dressed in funky trousers and skirts, which at times went over the thighs, and halter tops which afforded a generous view of the torso. Iraj, Tanya Shaft, Vinnie, Rubab, Z.Q, Nadya Hussain and a host of other models were all in competition wanting to be the best woman. But then, the guys in the backdrop were game enough to be in close proximity of any seductress. A loud daring collection indeed. However, not without its share of sass and sophistication. Only for the sophisti-cats!
