Shop till you flop

By Saima Salman

In our hectic, day-to-day grind, one of the most refreshing and fun things to do is Eid shopping. And it is not a woman’s perspective alone.

This is an occasion when one forgets the rumblings in ones tummy (if you’re fasting) but concentrates instead on finding the right jora and jewelry to make the most of our big day or rather three big days. The idea these days is to be comfortable, considering the sweltering heat, and yet look festive. Another balance we need to strike is the right fusion of east and west. Whereas Eid is nothing without chooris and mehndi, one does not want to end up looking too decked up.

On that note, one must survey the market once before actually buying the material and accessories to go with your clothes. The ready-to-wear designer fare is still very keen on capris with long shirts, some with exquisite and intricate embroidery. There is some fabulous benarsi cloth available these days that need not be worked upon at all. Thanks to the influx of Indian fabric, rich colours from across the border are a lovely sight for sore eyes.

On the other hand slowly creeping back into the fashion scene are beiges and most definitely whites. Some Pakistani boutiques offer white chikan kari on both chiffon and cotton that is to die for. That teamed up with the Hyderabadi chooris with glass work, if you can get your hands on them, can look really stylish indeed. If you are more inclined towards looking more in vogue, the short kurti with all sorts of diamantes and bead work can be worn over a comfortable pair of capris very much in fashion.

Footwear one has to admit, is difficult to find especially a pair that is not gaudy. Unfortunately, fashion these days is heavily embellished chappals that are both heavy on the feet and pocket. One would much rather slip on a Kohlapuri or khussa, easily available in delicate designs. One of the most popular accessories this season is the belt. But make sure you have the figure to go with it and you don’t end up looking bulky and overweight. These belts are being worn by the younger lot and popularly around the hips. It is difficult to decide if Eid shopping is more fun than even Eid itself!
