Kaka’s charisma

By M Wasim

Brazilians love their soccer. Not only has Brazil won the World Cup five times (most by any country), it is also the biggest producer of quality footballers as its players can be seen playing for international soccer clubs everywhere in the world.

Be it the UEFA Cup in Europe or the Major Soccer League in North America, there is not even a single major club which doesn’t have the services of a Brazilian soccer player.

With the advantage of having thousands of players engaged in club football around the world, the national outfit of Brazil is always considered a robust team. It is the strikers and forwards who have always been a force to be reckoned with whenever Brazil has won the World Cup. It was the great Pele in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Romario in 1994 and Ronaldo in 2002 who played major roles in their teams winning the World Cup.

However, unlike the past, the strength of the present Brazilian squad lies in the midfield region. The team is bestowed with two of the world’s great midfielders. Ronaldino has already proved his class during the first half of the decade and won two successive ‘Player of the Year’ awards in 2004 and 2005 -- the backbone of FC Barcelona is magnificent and one of the best playmakers of the world. But the one man who has stolen the show in 2007 is his national teammate Kaka – who is likely to grab most of the world soccer individual awards this year.

Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, known as Kaka, plays for Italian club AC Milan and has established himself as the strongest and most attacking midfielder in 2007. He has not only played a pivotal role for his club in winning the UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious title for European clubs, but also was the highest scorer of the league with 10 goals.

Unlike Ronaldino who has a great reputation for setting up tricky plans or trying out his long-range free kicks for hitting goals, Kaka is different in style and attitude. He tries out things in his own way using his speed, headers and positional-play from a close range of the goal post. His control over the ball is awesome and his skills are so clinical that they can convert even an ordinary pass into a great move, and thereafter a goal.

Kaka is an attacking midfielder and prompt striker at the same time. In AC Milan with striker like Inzaghi he doesn't just limit himself to delivering a pass, in fact, he keeps the moves in regular, but deceptive, functioning that makes the goalkeeper helpless. A sharp dodger and a beautiful dribbler of the ball, his intelligent finishing makes him a perfect reader of the game.

Kaka is regarded as a steady performer, but in the 2007 UEFA Champions League season, his career has seen the peak of his performance where he’s the top scorer with 10 goals. But his extraordinary class was witnessed during a match against Manchester United in the semifinal where he hit twice in heavy rains and won the match for his team by 3-0. In the final against Liverpool his two assists enabled Inzaghi to score twice and Milan won the trophy.

Last month, the UEFA named him the European Club Player of the Year, besides giving him the award for best forward during last season's Champions League. The UEFA fan-zone also elected him the Player of the Year, choosing him over players like Gerrard and Totti. However, he is likely to grab even more prestigious awards like Ballon d' Or, popularly known as the European Footballer of the Year award. He is amongst the top contenders for receiving the FIFA Player of the Year trophy as well, announced at the end of every year.
