Peace of mind
By Haider Naqvi
In today’s world, one is witnessing an unprecedented technological advancement. Everyday we see entertainment-gadgets being manufactured. Yet, for most people ‘peace of mind’ is quite elusive. No wonder, young and old alike, impervious to the ever-present principles of peace and tranquility, are turning towards psychotropic drugs, which leave them blissfully numb and oblivious to their surroundings. It is ironic that the kingdom of peace and tranquility is within all of us -- which need not be evoked by drugs. All that is required is meditation and some introspection.
So what are these principles that govern happiness and contentment in our lives? Before we can understand them we have to understand our true self. All of us have to know who we really are beyond the persona of our daily lives. It helps us in going into the wilderness and seeing oneself in the light of the nature. Nature echoes back our thoughts, aspirations, hopes and despair enabling us to see who we rally are. Thunderous rivers, tall mountains, swaying trees always talk to us.
It is said peace resides within a person’s mind and soul. The environment does have a role to play in bringing tranquility and serenity to us. The cool breeze, the lazy flow of stream water, and the magnanimous mountains all embalm the human psyche. One can observe the human mind and soul brining new meaning and values to life. The steadfastness of mountains and their centuries-old poise and composure give us lessons of patience and growth. The snow-capped mountains covered with mystical haze speak of fortitude and God’s abundant grace.
Even seemingly ordinary rocks appear to admonish us. One wonders what they are doing there -- just lying there in the path of the rivers. What is their purpose? Do they break the pressure of water and thereby prevent floods or allow vegetation to grow on and around them? They are of all shapes and sizes; balancing themselves with great poise and elegance.
Each stone has its own unique personality. Some are large and some are small, but all are equally important. Some small rocks provide support to very large rocks. Can we take home a message from them? Is there a secret in their dwelling? They seem to answer: ‘we are the same in quality as the mountains.’ We are one with them. We may not be able to reach the heights where we have come from. Nevertheless, we remain true to our nature and do what we are created to do; serve earnestly. It is up to you to choose the path of your journey and not lie dormant in the path of life. Be not like a rock on the sides of the river as being on the wayside of life; live with a purpose albeit small.
Water has an existence that is unique in the world. This may have spiritual connotations. Its every particle is connected with the other -- from the source to the delta; it is one continuous being, gushing forth through the mountains and rocks towards an unknown destination making itself essential for exisisrnce. It takes the shades and colours of the land it passes through.
One cannot help but notice the leaves lying around when walking through the woods. They are of all shapes and sizes, but mostly the same colour; brown and dried. One can not help but wonder. They have served their purpose, lived their lives, and made their contribution. In the end they get separated from their source i.e. trees. It is a perpetual cycle of reincarnation and service. What is lost in one season is grown back in the next.
Is not human life more or less the same? We all come to this world to play our part; in the end what remains is the carcass, which is mixed with dust. Like the trees and leaves what is unique for us is the connection with our greater self i.e. the infinite intelligence who is the source of all life and creation. Just as the new leaves are bursting forth from the trees, so is the new life emerging from this infinite source of love, wisdom, creativity and abundance. You should rejoice in the connectedness, in your being, originating from the Supreme Being, serving your purpose. Your fate will be like the leaves. You are born to live, not to die.
Trees impart lesson of patience and stillness. On cannot but stand in awe after seeing old trees. Majestically they stand tall for centuries. What is the mystery behind their patience and perseverance? They seem to answer: ‘don’t bother yourself with trivial things; focus on the roots.
Every creature of God has a purpose and mission. The question that you have to ask your self is: are you fulfilling your purpose? Be yourself until you discover your true self. Life has raises certain questions which you have always shied away from. In answering these questions you will discover the true meaning of your existence. How can this be hidden from you? How can you live a life of chaos? Nature is so organised and planned. You have to discover yourself. This will reinvigorate and galvanise your mind and soul and will giving true meaning to your life.
If you have not gathered the principles of happy living then take time out to go into the woods.
