For a better tomorrow

By Atif Khan

Global warming is here to stay. No matter what we do, the world is in a constant heating process that will make sure that in the coming years the climate deteriorates to an extent where it will take a couple of hundred years for it all to return to normal. And this climatic change is resulting in an irreversible process.

The melting ice is depriving the polar bear of more places to live. The warming of oceans is killing the marine life at an unprecedented scale while the melting glaciers, a source of water for millions, are bound to disappear for good, taking with them fresh sources of water. Just last week, scientists announced that winter air temperatures over Antarctica have risen by more than 2C in the last 30 years. For these and many other climatic upheavals to reverse, it is imperative that a stand be taken now, today, so that we can ensure the coming generations will have a hope to survive on this planet. And on the Net, there are quite a few sites that help you take the initiative.

One site is that of the Carbon Coach. At http://www.carboncoach.com/ Dave Hampton is the Carbon Coach who’s tackling the whole issue of global warming by cutting his contribution of CO2. Like he says, “Saving money and feeling better about the world just got a lot easier. If you’re like me, you like the idea of tackling climate change but not the idea of the cost or hassle involved.”

Which is where Dave is contributing to the using less electricity and turning off all gadgets whenever possible. Isn’t that something that you can do as well? Switch off the lights when leaving the room, don’t leave the television running so that less fuel is used to power your house and in return, you can really cut on the electricity bills!

For those who are really away from the whole issue of global warming, Dave has information on why carbon emissions matter, add up your contribution of CO2 emission with the help of an online calculator and quite simply, discover the difference you can make.

Another site that helps us realize the gravity of the situation is Think Purple. Now, nothing to do with contributing money or buying ‘I care for the environment’ t-shirts. This site takes into account something entirely different. At http://www.thinkpurple.info/ they say that if CO2 were purple you would have seen the sky change colour in your own lifetime — and the world would long ago have taken action to control carbon emissions. Now that’s something isn’t it.

Since carbon dioxide is an odourless, colourless gas that people don’t think about that much. “Our aim is to make carbon ‘visible’ — to harness the power of the visual imagination to combat climate chaos. To establish a clear connection in the mind’s eye between energy use, human actions and carbon emissions. To promote by every means a vivid, memorable and compelling idea — the need to Think Purple”, says the site.

A different type of site encountered on the search was the Treehugger http://www.treehugger.com/. A web magazine, it is dedicated to everything that has a modern aesthetic yet is environmentally responsible. People stop by frequently to check out the latest news, reviews and recommendations for modern yet green products and services. Consumers also rely on the directory to help facilitate their buying processes. TreeHugger is the most effective way for them to find well designed products that are also ecologically sensitive.

If you’d like to contact TreeHugger with tips, suggestions, comments, or product announcements, you can email the tips to people at the site. Believe me, belonging to a concrete jungle like Karachi, this site comes as a breeze of refreshing ideas. And when everything is going environmentally conscious, and I am not saying that it shouldn’t, then why not the experience of enjoying a green holiday?

People at the Natural Tourism http://www.naturaldiscovery.co.uk/ believe it is possible for us to live more comfortably yet sustainability. Tourism holds a unique opportunity, not yet realized, to demonstrate how easy this is to do in our everyday lives. Our Discovery Breaks enable guests to discover and take-home this experience, in an enjoyable and interactive way for all. The site promises to offer all year round tourism in partnership with local people, welcoming visitors and enhancing the local economy and services, positively healthy holidays which encourage guests to take-home the experience and make a real difference everyday.

Environmental degradation is happening all around us. Here in our country, particularly the cities, there is a dearth of trees, and businesses cut trees without giving it a second thought. All along the main arteries of the city, fully grown trees are mercilessly chopped so that we can be bombarded with advertising messages at will. Is there someone out there listening and can an end be brought about to this macabre act? n
