Bad guys for all

By Atif Khan

The magic of movies has captivated millions of people over the last 100 years. The action, the drama, the romance, the suspense — movies introduced a whole new avenue of storytelling. From their early beginnings in the cinema houses, movies have come a long way. They have moved into our homes today and we can now easily enjoy them within the comforts of our bedroom and living room.

One of the main reasons for our fascination with movies have been its characters. The heroes, the heroines and, of course, the villains have left lasting impressions. And so many of these villains have been so memorable that people have idolized and copied them.

There are many bad guys whom we’ve encountered over the years. My personal favourite is Norman Bates from the classic, Psycho. Of course, for many kids the favourite is Scar, the uncle from the hit animated feature, Lion King. Sadly, Scar didn’t make it to the American Film Institute’s top 50 villains of all time. In fact, the No 1 villain on the list at http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/handv.aspx is Dr Hannibal Lecter of The Silence of The Lambs.

Apart from the bad guys, there is also a list of the best 50 good guy’s from American cinema’s 100-year history. There are numerous other lists dedicated to the world of movie villains and the one devoted to Bond villains can be viewed at http://www.jamesbondmm.co.uk/bond-villains.php. There you can find detailed information about all those who have, of course unsuccessfully, tried to get rid of the most famous secret agent in the world (at least in the movies).

A similar list of those that are evil is that of the Star Wars Villains at http://fan.in-my-skin.org/darkside/ which is a fan listing of Darth Vader and his buddies from the six Star Wars movies.

On a lighter, yet scarier side, is the official list of the Disney villains at http://disney.go.com/vault/archives/villains_ai.html. Indexed into three categories, here of course you will find Scar, Lion King’s uncle who caused so much trouble to Simba. Click on the name of any fiend and go through the details of the guy you love to hate.

By the way, have you ever thought of becoming one? No? That’s all right, just click to http://www.mutedfaith.com/quiz/vq.htm to find out how good a villain you can actually be. But before you embark on your mission of self-discovery, by answering 11 questions here, you must remember that this quiz is all about having fun. Just be careful when you press that button at the bottom. The results can be quite a revelation, or hilarious, whichever way you take it.

Coming back to the initial question, interested in being a bad guy? If you say, yes then click to the Chips guide to being an evil overlord at http://chiplondon.tripod.com/evil/. There are guidelines about hiring henchmen, fighting good, career, first steps and numerous other links that will help you achieve your goals. And still if you feel that your task is not complete, then click to the next site. Surely, this one will get you going on your mission. Aptly titled, So You’ve Decided to be Evil at http://evil-guide.tripod.com/, this site is a step-by-step guide to joining the forces of darkness. Evil always needs more tools (agents) for its unholy army of the night, and by joining now you can rest assured that your remaining years will be spent pursuing the ‘good’ things of life: lust, greed and the construction of enormous weather machines and what not. Your favourite hobby can become a lifelong career, is the claim of this site. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it?

Did you feel like you were the only one who preferred Alan Rickman’s Sherriff of Nottingham to Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood? Well, fear not for this site is here to help you join others of your type. Hot Bad Guys at http://www.hotbadguys.com/ is one place that has lists of hot, cool and creepy guys. It has hot bad holidays and links to numerous other baddie things. But the best thing about this site is that it is updated, therefore you can relate to more of the recent stuff as well as the classics. A good site to hang around.

In case you want to explore more of the evil in movies, then the site, The Return to Darkness at http://users.rcn.com/perfecto/villains.html is our final attempt to get you going. Here they get it right when they say that the villain is usually a representation of ultimate evil to the people who dislike him. But in his own mind, his intentions are noble and pure. The villain always has an ulterior motive or a supreme plan. He views other people as pawns in his ultimate scheme of things. He is not afraid to make strange bedfellows on his way to achieving his goals. Hear, hear.

So this completes our trip of the baddies in the world of movies. The silver screen has created so many of them, and so effectively that most of us just cannot get them off our minds. And these sites tell you all you want to know about them and much more.
