An ode to mom

By Qurratulain Poonawala

God couldn’t always be with us, so he made a mother and instilled in her deified qualities; those of love, care, affection and sacrifice.

From the moment we take our first gulp of fresh air, her existence melts away to become one with us and from thereon our smiles, tears and dreams become hers.

A mom’s tender affection, her smiles and presence touches every heart. She is always with you like a friend and loves you immensely, each and every day. For all that she does, you can thank and surprise her with a virtual Mother’s Day Card from http://www.123greetings.com/events/mothers_day/ which offers a variety of top e-cards to tell mom you care. Amidst the hype and celebrations, we never think of tracing back the roots of Mother’s Day, which since antiquity has been a day of celebration and commemoration. However, we no more need to dread about flipping through the yellowing pages of thick history books to find out the beginning of Mother’s Day as it is now just a click away with http://www.holidays.net/mother/story.htm which states that the earliest Mother’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honour of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. With the spread of Christianity and the integration of global cultures the hype trickled down to England and the US. Due to the increasing significance of Mother’s Day, many customs and rituals related to this day arose which are compiled on http://wilstar.com/holidays/mothers.htm, a site that gives an account of how Mother’s Day is celebrated in different countries around the world. The site also features ‘Some Motherly Advice’ which is a list of funny and sarcastic advice, do’s and don’ts that all moms usually preach and ‘what Bible has to say about Mothers’ which is a reality check in the light of religion and ethics. It gives us an account of where mothers stand in the eyes of God and how they should be treated.

However, if you think this is all to the origin of Mother’s Day, well this is just the beginning; the rest of the historic account is just a click away.
