Gone haywire
With reference to the article Gone haywire (March 13), it’s true that sometimes people misguide you and in the end, you suffer a financial or some other material loss. But I would like to mention one thing here; if you purchase something new like a mobile, that are very common nowadays, take advice from someone who has been using the same or a similar device, before doing so. Secondly, to be influenced by a product advertisement and to simply buy the product is not a wise thing to do.

Mukhtaran’s moral war
With reference to the article Mukhtaran’s moral war (March 13), the educated mind is forced to ponder upon the fact that such a shamelessness act can still take place. The moral degradation of anyone, especially a woman, is one of the most heinous crimes. How would the perpetrators feel if their own sisters, mothers, daughters or wives were stripped of their self-respect and integrity?

(2) Mukhtaran Mai perhaps never knew that her bruised soul will be more hurt and humiliated when despite of her hoping for justice, she met a disappointing end. This really brings into question the validity of the government’s claims and its talk of women’s rights and liberation. The acquittal of the accused goes to manifest clearly that there is no working law and order in our so-called Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Balochistan’s imbroglio
With reference to the article Balochistan’s imbroglio (March 20), I have only one question to ask here. When will our leadership stop daydreaming and learn to face objective realities with a clear vision and a will to find workable solutions, as is done in our neighbouring country?

Wedding meals
With reference to the article Wedding meals (March 13), the writer seems oblivious to the fact that it is more acceptable to enable a person to earn his/her bread than to make that person used to leftovers of parties. It is in fact the responsibility of the state and the state apparatus to rehabilitate the have-not strata of the society. At the same time, this process can be aided by the well-off individuals of the society to a degree.
The writer’s contention that the multi-dish wedding parties provides scour to the poor, counters the fact that such parties served only to highlight the ever-widening divide between rich and ragged.
At the same time, these parties generated and fanned a sense of nothingness among low-income groups and provided the rich with an opportunity to publicly flex their economic muscle and standing.

An Indian odyssey
With reference to the lead article by Pervez Hoodbhoy An Indian odyssey (February 20), let me point out that the burqa or veil has nothing to do with modernism. In fact the very word means advancement and improvement is socio-economic conditions and quality of life i.e. decrease in mortality rate, development in communication etc. It is by no means a hurdle in the way of acquiring modern knowledge.
We, the Muslims should preach Islam to be a religion of optimism and broad mindedness, rather than defaming its norms and practices ourselves.
