Taken for a ride
WITH reference to the article Taken for a ride (January 16), I would like to point out that the writer was out of context in at least two places. Once when he said that he got on the bus and after an encounter with the realities of life being faced by the people of Karachi, he wanted to get off the bus at the next stop. But he got off at Empress Market, which definitely is not the next stop if you alight a bus at Defence.
Then, he recounts that a taxi driver demanded Rs50 for a ride from Empress Market to his residence in Defence, that too in April of last year.
Who is the author kidding? Even at that time, the rate for such a ride would have been Rs100 to Rs150 at least.

Arrogant America and the Muslims
WITH reference to the article Arrogant America and the Muslims (January 23), the Muslims who migrated to US are basically the ones at fault.
The US society as never been a united society, right from day one. For the sake of survival, Muslims living in the US used nick names that sound like Christian nick names. After September 11, hatred for the Muslims in the US increased manifold. Therefore, there is no other alternative for the Muslims living in the US except to return back and get settled in their respective countries before the US authorities snatch their American passports and residency and deport them.
I also once had an opportunity to migrate to the US, which I declined. Until September 10, 2001, people called me one of the most foolish guys in Pakistan. After September 11 and after seeing the attitude that the US authorities had adopted with the Muslims in the US, I am graded as one of the wisest men on the earth by the same people.
By the grace of God, I am doing very well in Pakistan and have no regrets, whatsoever, of not using the opportunity to land in the ‘land of opportunities’. And I thank God for he has saved me from all the hassle, which I would have gone through, after becoming a third-grade citizen in the US.

Losing sight of the heavens
WITH reference to the article Losing sight of the heavens (January 16), we in this part of the world are making a mess of things as far as the rules and orders are concerned.
We must think about the problem of light pollution seriously and make laws to promote awareness about the problem. It’s a kind of the vandalism of the space age and must be controlled. We should also promote astronomy, as it’s a way to be aware about the grandeur of the Almighty.

Speak your mind
WITH reference to the article Speak your mind (January 24), it is in fact of paramount importance to look into how relationships work.
Often it has been noticed that we keep our expectations so high that relationships collapse when our expectations are not obliged. The problem is that we want others to think our way. Thus it becomes hard to maintain a healthy and lasting relationship. One should not take liberties every time with the other in the relationship. We need to understand the very sensitivity of the matters involved in a relationship and nurture it wisely and timely.
Niccolo Machiavelli said: “You cannot deal with every person in the manner you like to.” Thus I think, things are there not to change when you wish them so. Wise, it would be then to accept them realistically and do what is at one’s disposal. Interestingly life offers encounters at manifold now the option is with man what to pick and what not to
