NET-CLIP: A click and a resolution

By Syed Hassan Aftab

As I decided to come up with some really good New Year resolutions for 2005, an idea came to my mind. Why not search the Internet and find sites that have been designed or are related to New Year resolutions? I did just that. Since the experience proved to be helpful, I would like to share the noteworthy results of my search.

I have always had the bad habit of making gigantic New Year resolutions in the hopes of making a drastic change in life. Bad I say because though they filled a few pages in my personal register, they certainly weren’t what I exactly wanted, as the site http://cms.psychologytoday.com/articles/index.php?term=PTO-20030204-000005 proved when I clicked into it. Not only does this site help you with making your new Year’s resolutions, it also explains why and how you should make realistic ones. Here you help yourself choose personal projects that really have a meaning to you. The values, identity and joy aspects of the projects follow the explanation.

The website also encourages you to focus on making the change manageable, which means that you have to structure your personal environment to facilitate your goal. Then there’s an example of how a lightweight resolution loses its vitality because of the ‘what-the-hell’ effect.

However, the address http://www.care2.com/channels/solutions/bms/1013 is totally against the concept of New Year resolutions. Why? Well, it contends that these resolutions have their roots in shame and punishment. The page informs that what you really need for New Year resolutions is more self-trust!

The most important part about a New Year resolution is to accept and honour the heartfelt longings underneath, since this strategy directs your resolution towards a revolution. I was amazed to see that nearly all websites related to New Year resolutions, including this one, have examples to make someone lose weight or quit smoking. The examples also highlight how you can apply the look-good methodologies in your life. Another key point is to focus on the positive and ignore the negative. This turned out to be an excellent page on the feel-good factor about New Year resolutions.

Some people make New Year resolutions in their minds only. But if someone wants to write down these resolutions then the clicking trail leads to http://blackdog4kids. com/holiday/newyear/ resolve/ The site provides an opportunity to personalize your resolutions in the form of a chart. Links are displayed here that help you fill a chart. Just enter your name and voila! Pop comes one with your name at the top saying (your full name)’s New Year resolutions, followed by blank rows and columns to write.

There are five such links, all numbered, yet with the same layout and format. The good part is about the procedure which is very simple to follow. The chart may not be colourful, but you may take some printouts and write down whatever your resolutions are.

Many people make infinite New Year resolutions. There are people who make more than a hundred resolutions for just one year but keep only a fraction of the total. I was lucky to find a website http://www.how-to-keep-your-new-years-resolution.com/html/success.html that gives useful tips on how one can successfully keep all the resolutions one has made. The site guides you to not try everything at once and you should only work on one thing at a time. How to word one’s resolutions is another helpful service that this site offers, for the words may make you feel stressed or relaxed. If the words make you feel stressed, rephrase them so that they sound gentler. And when you make a New Year resolution plan, do break it down into achievable pieces. Your written plan should be prominently visible either as a sticker on your refrigerator, or on top of your desk, etc.

It was interesting to see that there are websites not only for humans but for their pets too. The web address http://www.classbrain.com/artholiday/publish/article_433.shtml discusses the imperative pet issues that would surely help your pet in the coming year once you include these issues in your New Year resolutions’ list! It was also interesting to note that many pet issues were briefly discussed that we normally ignore. The issues, stated as New Year resolutions for pets, include taking pets to a veterinarian for a yearly examination, keeping their vaccinations up-to-date, feeding them with appropriate food, training them to behave well, etc. etc. There are lots more to find out if you hurry.

If you are already done with making your New Year resolutions, you may remind others of doing the same. The website http://www.postcards.org/postcards/cards/0340/ has several colourful e-cards and messages, both funny and sober that are related to New Year resolutions. These e-cards are easily downloadable and viewable.

When you select a card of your choice, you may also view similar cards. You may also choose to include an optional title to appear on top of your e-card, or an optional personalized message to appear at the end of the card.

The website provides you with a list to include a soundtrack as background music, and to include a background theme depicting sun, flowers, etc. that changes the looks of the entire e-card. You can recheck the card by previewing, or send it without previewing. You may also send the same card to multiple recipients through the ‘send this card again’ option.

The greatest New Year resolution is to believe that you can do it. This is according to a page at http://www.geocities.com/bigsmallnow/res2005.html that exhibits the anonymous inspirational poem The Man Who Wins, though the ‘Man’ here would be suitable for the woman as well.

The one-page message may look puerile, but what are resolutions all about? How many times have we failed to work on a resolution just by doubting our own abilities. And here we have a poem that wants us to believe in ourselves.
