White beaches and good accomodation make Thailand one of the major tourist destiantions in the world
Clear skies, cool breeze, sunglasses and lemonade are the ideal ingredients if one needs to enjoy a beach. And if the beach is coated with a layer of white sand, then it’s nothing less than heaven. Or as on Earth we like to call that place, Thailand.
The country offers some of the most serene and spectacular beaches in the world. That is also why it is a major tourist destination.
Most of the visitors travelling Thailand prefer staying at places like Koh Samui, Pukhet, Pattya and others which are well-known for their hospitable beaches. The capital Bangkok is mostly avoided because of its congestion.
My vacation started at Koh Samui. But reaching the place is no easy task. I first took a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani and from there hitched a boat ride to Samui.
If Thailand’s beaches are among the best in the world then Samui’s beaches are surely the most peaceful and quite in Thailand. The best thing about Samui’s beaches is that most of the accommodation is along the sand. Once you have rested after putting down your luggage in your room, the stunning beaches wait for you at you doorstep.
Since Koh Samui is an island, beaches are everywhere. So, theoretically, if you were to start walking from one end of the island, you would end up at the same place, after having completed a full circle! Which also is plus point since it means that you will not get lost! However, Chewang and Lamai are the two well known beaches in town. The former is popular for its luxurious hotels and the later is for its spectacular sea that is dotted with rocks.
What makes Samui’s beaches calm is the fact that every hotel has its own beach, reserved solely for the guests. In addition, Samui is almost twelve months of the year filled with visitors rather than locals. However, in months like June and July when it rains all over Thailand the town is less frequented by visitors.
Phuket is another destination for beach lovers that is connected by a bridge with the rest of the country. Phuket is quite a big town, and that is why after reaching the place, you have to pick one of the two options: either you can stay in Phuket town or you can go directly to Patong Beach, Phuket’s main tourist attraction.
I decided to stay in Phuket town because the next morning I wanted to enjoy motor-biking. At almost all the tourist places in Thailand you can easily rent a new bike at a very nominal rate. Going to Phuket’s beaches from the town is really an unforgettable journey. Riding the bike on the clean roads, cutting through green mountains was something I had never experienced before.
Although Phuket claims to have a lot of beach sites, Patong beach is the most striking spot. Along the beach there is a very long shopping stretch that offers a range of shops and departmental stores where you can pick souvenirs.
The biggest feature of Patong beach is para-gliding . This adventurous outing is something one should not avoid. After donning a particular wear you become a chutist and glide through the clouds, above the waves. Okay, so it’s not that high, but still it is really exciting.
If you find Patong crowded, as I did, then there are other beaches in Phuket as well where you can find peace and tranquillity and easily spend a whole day relaxing and enjoying nature at its best.
Patayya on the other hand is the most visited destination in Thailand, not because of its beaches but due to its closeness to Bangkok. There are a couple of small, beautiful islands near Patayya that are an escape from its, at times, crowded beaches. To take you to these islands a number of ferris await you rarrival. But if you are in the mood to spend a lot extra, then you can hire a private boat. I wisely took the ferry and had the opportunity of talking to a couple of Indian families who accompanied me on the ferry making the hour-and-a-half long journey unnoticeable.
At the island, the semi-submerged rocks and the high green mountains along with the white sand beaches, looked lively, a scene that I still vividly remember.
Although the island is quite small many tourists prefer staying here for a night, partying all night long beside a bonfire.
The boat that took us back to Patayya had a special glass through which we could see the underwater life. It was indeed a trip to remember.
