A gamers’ delight

By Sheena Ali

There are times when you get blazing Internet speeds, have a state of the art PC and ample free time on your hands. You check your e-mail, log out and fire up your browser. But as soon as it pops open, you stop; where do you go from here? How do you make the best of these great online tool? Seems like boredom has finally got the best of you. Or has it?

It is at times such as these that you want to do something different, something like visiting gaming websites. And what’s more, there are sites that don’t even require great Internet connection, a blazing processor or special gaming cards; all you need are the games that the doctor ordered!

You can either play these games online and test your skills with players from all around the world or go for a solo by downloading these time killing and small sized (a descent game is no more than 400Kb) games. But before you begin, beware these games are extremely addictive and your mom could be screaming at you for not joining the family at dinner just because you are too engrossed shooting pigeons online.

My favourite here is www.miniclip.com. This website has everything and anything from sports, puzzle, action, adventure, shoot’em up and multi-player games. The front page itself is pretty appealing and I bet it’s going to take up loads of your time just to select a game from the long list of ever-increasing games that these guys add here every week.

Then there’s www.kewlbox.com. Very similar to what you’d find at Miniclip, this website has some pretty interesting mind challenging games bound to give your gray cells a tough time. My favourite is the ‘Fowl Words’ where you make up words from scrambled alphabets laid by hens. Also do have a go at ‘Spank The Frank’ where you hit falling penguins for as far as you can. This is one of the most-played games at Kewlbox. You can even check out high scores by gamers from all around the world and try your luck at faring better then them.

A website tailor made for slow Internet connections is www.lilgames.com. You can browse from a large variety of online and downloadable games and it even has a cartoon and greeting cards section that is definitely worth a look. Do check out the “Acne Be Gone” game where you pop acne on a guy’s face without hurting him and you have to make sure that you clean his face before running out of time. It may sound gross but that’s where the fun is. Another website worth mentioning is www.unlimitedwebgames.com where you try your hand at different board, puzzle, pet and online role-playing games. This address is different from the above mentioned ones as it is more focused on mind challenging games. What if you couldn’t score big in Counter Strike — you can try your hand at ‘Camper Strike’ which is a parody of the famous game. A good site overall, but takes some time to load on a slow Internet connection.

If you think Yahoo! is only a portal, then I guess you’re right. http://games.yahoo.com has games that are not only addictive but also highly engrossing. One of the most visited site’s on the web offers has demo versions of games that you could only buy off the rack. Pool and snooker lovers have a ball of a time here. You can create free pool and snooker games and invite players from all around the world where you can chat, play and even tease your opponents. It has various game reviews which you can read before actually buying the game itself, a must see site for hardcore gamers.

PopCap www.popcap.com is a good website for online gaming and you find much variety here. Also, you’re in luck if you have a Palmtop or a PocketPC; this website offers various games for your handhelds. That takes care of all those pesky visits to the mobile phone vendor in search of games.

If you’re into classic DOS based games and can’t find the games you used to play on your first computer, way back in the previous century, then check out www.dosgamesarchive.com. It has free downloadable games like Prince Of Persia I, DOOM, Aladdin, Mario Bros. and the all time favourite, Monopoly. Though you won’t find any games here you could play online, you will find games that you ever played on your 286, 386 or 486 computers. Till last count this site had a good 220 games in its archive.

Now if your kid is adamant upon joining you at playing online games and you think you can’t find the right website for him/her, go to http://www.kidsdomain.com/games/. The people here claim to have games-o-licious games and if you have a really inquisitive child then try this one for yourself. It even has Math and Science games to sharpen your kid’s skills, perfect for brainstorming coupled with fun.

Calling all chess freaks, if you thought that I have left out the game of kings, think again. A wonderful website for playing online chess is www.chessworld.net. They claim it to be a friendly online chess club where you can play with players from all over the world. This address is rapidly becoming the best place to play, compete in tournaments, join teams, learn, keep in touch with old friends and make new friends worldwide.

All said and done, the PC is no more the machine left only for work. It can be your friend, a partner and a soulmate that wont ditch you when you need it the most. If you are a really hard working, executive kind of a guy who doesn’t do anything other than spreadsheeting, check out the above mentioned websites and you could be in for a big surprise. But be careful they are highly addictive. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you!
