NET-CLIP: Online oranges

By Ali Arbi

The winters are here or so it seems. Nevertheless, December is very much into its first week and therefore winters are here.

Along with the cold and dry air that makes life a bit difficult for us city dwellers the one things that the winter season brings with it are the various citrus delights. From kino to grapefruit, winters herald the coming of some of the best and most loved fruits in the country. And they are some of the healthiest there are and probably that is why the citrus variety also have a major presence on the Net.

The first and probably one of the most informative sites that I came across is www.thefruitpages.com. There is information related to the nutrients present in almost every kind of citrus fruit. Recipes and medical information too are present in full detail. However, the layout is not very impressive. There have also not been any major changes in the site for a long time.

Another site of great interest is www.farmworld.com as it provides not only information about citrus fruits but also about other fruits in great detail. Information here talks about the various industries around the world responsible for production and quality control of citrus fruits. It also gives information about the conditions favourable for the growth of these esculents. The one feature of this site that will appeal to our young generation are the job opportunities and career guidance that the site offers in the fruit industry.

Though Pakistan is rich in fruits, citrus included, there are still many of them in the world which we don’t know about. And unfortunately these fruits are not available in our country. Details about them are, however, available in a very colourful manner at www.tradewindsfruit/citrus.htm. This is by far the most visually appealing web site regarding citrus fruits as each fruit has a picture next to its name and you can search through a database for particular fruit, including its qualities and uses. The orange background also blends very well with the material on the site.

As for the citrus fruits available in Pakistan you can visit www.pakissan.com/english/spotlite/citrus/index.shtml. Though not impressive by international standards, the site, however, does provides sufficient information about the agriculture and production of citrus fruits in Pakistan. And where there are encouraging facts about other international sites, the most pitiful fact about this one is that it has not been updated since 2002. Needless to say, we cannot correctly estimate whether the production rate has gone up or down.

There is also a treat for all the cooking experts out there. Mouth-watering desserts can dug out from www.ultimatecitrus.com/recipes.html as recipes for almost all kinds of desserts and victuals are here. Besides recipes this site also provides information regarding citrus fruits. However, the best part about this address is that it is updated regularly. So everyone can get the latest about citrus fruits. The are links to other sites such as http://www.maunyskitchen.com/ and for those of you who are interested in reading you can check out www.amazon.com to delve through several cook books that will keep your guests happy for a long time.

Most people are unaware of the fact that citrus fruits have several uses besides eating. Citrus fruits are used for making medicines such as aphrodisiacs and their crusts are used to create decorative items. This and many other uses of citrus fruits can be found on http://r0.unctad.org/infocomm/anglais/orange/uses.htm. This is a cool web site considering the fact that it educates us about these fruits in a way that we have not known before. This site provides uses for processed citrus fruits and citrus byproducts. Also another web site that serves the same purpose is http://www.sunkist.com/holiday/tips where you can find information to create cool stuff from citrus fruits to celebrate your festivals and other important occasions.

There are some unusual citrus fruits available whose qualities make them distinguishable from the rest of the citrus fruits. In this regard, the web site that amazed me is http://www.innvista.com/health/foods/fruits/unusual.htm where I found about some unusual citrus fruits and information regarding their growth, habitat, qualities and their uses.

Man all this writing has made me hungry. Think I’ll go and have a couple of oranges while you discover the best there is, online.
