Man never learns

With reference to Amar Jaleel’s column Man never learns (October 24), the fact remains that all previous democratic governments in Pakistan were dismissed by generals.

In 1958 General Ayub Khan took over and ruled the country for the next 13 years. Then Ziaul Haq’s 11 years lasted till 1988. Now General Musharraf is well entrenched in the seat of power and going into his fifth year. Pakistan’s history is full of lessons to learn but we are not ready to learn from them.

Death of a knowledge-seeker

With reference to the article Death of a knowledge-seeker (October 17), the alarming story of Nadia Baloch is indeed shocking.

Many of us are like Nadia; victims of social injustice. I do agree with the writer that many suicides take place due to family feuds, social taboos and injustices. But I also believe that Nadia’s case does not fall in these categories. She was a person of higher calibre. She could have fulfilled her desire.

Many like Nadia are suffering from the same diseases. Worse is the fact that talent does not work in our country. Only nepotism, despotism and sifarish do.

The dunes of Mitthi

With reference to the article The dunes of Mitthi (October 31), it was good to see an article about my beloved hometown.

However, I would like to correct that Mitthi is no more a town. It is a city and a district headquarter. Like a small city, it has all the facilities that include digital telephone connections, cable, Internet and even mobile phone services.

A satellite tower has been installed at the gaddi (topmost hill in Mitthi). There are rural areas in the vicinity of Mitthi, but the city itself is quite modern, though quite understandably it cannot be compared with Karachi.

Nevertheless the city has its own market place which is always well stocked .

The dream garden of an emperor

With reference to the article The dream garden of an emperor (October 31), the photographs of Bagh-e-Babar were quite impressive, especially the panoramic view of the garden reservoir.

The effects of wars on this monument are indeed devastating and I for one, am really appreciative of the efforts being made for the restoration of this invaluable historic monument.

Re-learning parenting

With reference to the article Re-learning parenting (October 31), unfortunately people in our society are still quite ignorant when it comes to parenting. What is usually seen in women here, especially housewives, is that they are over-scheduled. Raising a baby is itself a full time job which we fail to acknowledge. All family members must take equal part and work as a team; this can guarantee us better results, as we should keep in mind that mothers are not just raising children, there are adults as well!
