A cultural crisis
WITH reference to the article A cultural crisis (September 26), Pakistan has very valuable cultural heritage in the field of architecture. The Shah Jahani Masjid and Makli graveyard in Thatta, Shalamar Gardens, Badshahi Masjid, Shahi Qila (the imperial fort) in Lahore, Meers Tombs and Paka Qila (fort) in Hyderabad, Fort of Ranikot and many other such graceful buildings and sites are a living proof of the excellent cultural heritage in Pakistan. But unfortunately they are gradually decaying and ask a question to the lovers of the history. It is true that thousands of both protected and non-listed monuments are in a state of total disrepair throughout the country. Hundreds of historic structures are being pulled down discriminately in the name of modernity. It is believed that a nation that has no past, has no future. Are we heading towards no future?
Proper care of these valuable and historic sites will not only provide development and well-being for our people, but it will also be very helpful for the economic advancement of our nation. The government should pay full attention to overcome the difficulties faced by the concerned departments and NGOs must come forward to give a helping hand for the protection of these monuments.

Govt skating on thin ice
WITH reference to the article Govt skating on thin ice (October 10), where the ex-prime minister has blamed the General sahib for killing many in Waziristan, in the name of war against terror, I would like to add that killing the local population is nothing new in Pakistan. It has happened before, both during civilian and dictatorial rule. The brutality in Balochistan where numerous have been killed over the years. Such similar acts were perpetrated during the days of Benazir as well as Nawaz regimes. I don’t know whether it is our fate or our acts to face the problems individually which are created by the politicians.

IN his interview, ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has pretended as if he was the chief guardian of democratic institutions in Pakistan. He has tried to give the impression that he became the PM of Pakistan without any assistance from the army as he always opposed dictatorship.
Has he forgotten that he worked under the patronage of Gen. Zia, as a Chief Minister of Punjab? All that has happened now is that General Musharraf has not invited him to take part in the power sharing of the country and that is why he has things to say about the general.

Mind your language
WITH reference to the article Mind your language (October 10), Pakistan has some of the finest cricketers in the game whose claim to international fame and respect is their talent and skills. These cricketers take pride in representing our country and are great ambassadors of the nation.
However, what is truly shameful is the fact that there are people who have had the opportunity to attend private English-medium schools and choose to sit in front of a television and laugh at our national heroes on not knowing a foreign language. It is high time we grew out of the English complex that plagues many Pakistanis and learn to value the professionals who project the name of our country in a positive way.
