FOR millions of people around the world, the cellular phone, or mobile phone as we like to call them, are the ultimate communications device. Not only do they allow us to talk, they also allow us to perform tasks that were once only possible using the computer. And yet new tasks are being added every passing day.

Phone directory, To-Do Lists, Appointments, Calculator and all the entertainment that you can get your hands on; they are all there in your mobile.

But have you ever wondered how a cellphone works? Has it ever crossed your mind what makes it different from a regular phone? And what’s with all these terms? PCS, GSM, CDMA and TDMA, what do they all mean? Like me, if you are confused at all the doings of cell world, then log onto www.newscientist.com/hottopics/phones. Other than explaining the nitty-gritties of a mobile, the site also has the latest news about mobilephones. A news that intrigued me was that of a software that makes surfing from cellphones less fiddly, by allowing in-built cameras to automatically load web addresses.

Recent articles on mobile phones are just a click away. There’s even talk here of the potential effects on our health by a cellphone. A research, though only theoretical, suggests that radiation could cause the attraction between living cells to leap massively. But then, a study in America has concluded that mobile phones pose no increased risk of brain cancer, at least not for the first ten years.

Another site for consumer information on mobile phones, as well as wireless phones, another site to visit is http://www.fda.gov/cellphones/.

This web site explains through a diagrammatic illustration the whole operation of the cellphone. There is another complete set of information on radioactive rays that emitted through these phones.

Another informative site on the operation of the cellphone is http://www.howstuffworks.com/cell-phone.htm. There is a table of contents which contains information on how cellphones work, cell approach, engineering, frequencies, transmission and cellphone codes. You are also helped with a better understanding of TDMA, GSM and CDMA.

But with passing times, the situation has changed. There are loads of other good brands that come with different, maybe even better options.
