Mother’s Day came first, but Father’s Day wasn’t too far behind. But unlike Mother’s Day, the version for our daddy’s is credited to be the sole effort of one individual who thought that her daddy was the best in the world. Well, don’t we all!
It’s amazing what people accomplish when they put their minds to good use and encourage others to join their cause. And that’s how Father’s Day came to be. The genesis of the day was the desire of one woman to honour her father. Sonora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a “father’s day” while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. If mom’s can have it, then why can’t fathers? Her father was William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was widowed when his wife died during the birth of their sixth child. Alone, Smart raised his six children and it was one of them, Sonora who realized as an adult, the strength and selflessness of her father. And since Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June 1910.
The idea caught on across America and finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
