The most beautiful gal

By Muhammad Ali

COME June 1, the most beautiful girls in the universe will assemble in South America and vie for the title of the most beautiful girl in the Universe. Of course I am talking of the Miss Universe 2004 contest and the girls or the contestants who will be there will be those who have already been claimed the most beautiful in their respective countries.

The setting for this year’s Miss Universe contest is picturesque Quito, the Ecuadorian capital. The stage is set here for women from around the world who will be judged in various categories and decided who is the most beautiful of them all. The categories that they will be judged in, are swimsuit, evening gown and interview. The other awards that will be in the offing on that day will include National Costume, Miss Congeniality and Miss Photogenic — which, as you will read later, you can help decide! And the best way to keep up with the proceedings will be log on and click to the official site of the event, Miss Universe Central http://www.missuniverse.com/

Links include Miss Universe 2003, History, Host City that details about Quito. There’s also the fun stuff as well as one very enticing link for all females: Become Miss Universe.

But if you’re interested in knowing more about the contesting females; those vying to become this year’s Miss Universe. Then right there on the main page, there’s this drop down menu where you can select your candidate and know about her. What do you think? Will this year’s Miss India, Tanushree Dutta, walk in the footsteps of giants such as Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta? Stay logged on, on June 1 to find out.

Other very engaging activities on the web site involves an invitation to send flowers to any one or more than one of your favourite contestants. Of course, the flowers will cost you a good bundle. But hey, it’s worth spending that bundle on that beauty, eh? Another way of spending money here is you can purchase pictures of the delegates. Sad though that there isn’t any Miss Pakistan!

By the way, remember that Become Miss Universe link? Well, there’s a whole form here. All you have to do is fill out the form and the concerned people will get in touch with you. You can also try your luck and be your own judge and even shop online.

Another site that will help you get the gist of things is the Miss Universe Archive http://www.pageant.com/universe/. A bunch of past winners is present here from 1996 to 2003 where with photos you get to know of the previous winners, in text as well as in photos. But if it is the whole list of the previous winners that you are looking for then the previous winners link will take you to a list that presents the winners from 1952. Of course there’s Sushmita as well as Lara Dutta here. Also, look out for the 2002 box where there are two names. This was the year of controversy.

But if it’s history that you want to delve into then The Miss Universe Crystal Ball http://www.geocities.com/pageantmania2000/MissUniverseCrystalBall.html is your ticket to fun reading. Here it’s a walk through the history, names and pictures of the contestants, winners, their winning photographs and a brief commentary that says something about them. The history associated with that particular pageant, as well as the controversies that went with the winners and the event.

But as in all things that are popular and without the unglamorous, controversy has been a somewhat cornerstone of the Miss Universe pageant. And the site here is Miss World Definition http://www.free-definition.com/Miss-World.html.

Never mind the religious zeal that some display in objecting the display of bundles of beautiful women in bikins and revealing flesh. I am talking of agendas here that are much diverse and eye-opening to read. For example, did you know that this year, a transsexual, Chen Lili, who wanted to represent China, was denied participation at the contest? Man now this is the kind of info that really makes you wonder and think.

But for those who think that beauty pageants and beauty contests are a thing that should be put an end to forever, there’s an eye-opener at History of the Beauty Pageants of the Beauty Worlds http://www.beautyworlds.com/beautypageant.htm.

The article here takes a look at the history of beauty, right from the times of the Greek god, Zeus and his daughter Helen. The resulting Trojan war lasted for no less than ten years. Thereafter, history and controversy have been at the heart of the beauty contests, from the 1920s when the idea was toyed around with in America to the previous year when the beauty pageant was shifted from Nigeria to England.

So, with just a day to go, log onto to these sites and know, will your favourite beauty be crowed the most beautiful Miss in the Universe?
