And the award goes to ...

By Faisal Quraishi

The awards night has its own charm and nothing can beat the exhilaration of watching one’s favourite nominee win an award

“I would like to thank my mom, dad, brothers, sisters, grandma, grandpa, godmother, godfather, cousins, second-cousins, neighbours, the stranger on the street, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah ..... We’ve all heard award winners and their acceptance speeches at awards ceremonies, be it Hollywood, Bollywood or Lollywood, shooting off at the mouth and citing an endless list of ‘thank yous’ while receiving the coveted honour. The worst part besides the endless droning on is that despite panicky producers worrying about time slot restrictions, the winners make sure that everybody and anybody gets mentioned, no matter how many categories they win in and how many times they take the stage.

With the Oscar awards over and done for this year and the Lux Style Awards (LSA) ceremony lined up for April 27, in Dubai, chances are that viewers will get to see the charade all over again. If nominated for teary-eyed performances in awards ceremonies, there would be a whole new breed of winners. And then there is the awards night fashion. Although not as outrageously draped as some of the stars you see at the Oscars, still our local showbiz crowd does manage to make news. Last year, at the LSA, there was a whole lot of brouhaha when a popular filmi belle claimed that her designer outfit for the big night was pinched from right under her pretty little nose by a competitor. Later, however, she wished her good health while wearing it in an interview to a showbiz weekly.

Another popular act terribly in vogue these days among award winners is the “I can’t believe I won!” and “Who, me?” demeanour as cameras zoom in. They may stumble and falter, but pretty soon they’re up there clutching the coveted award while the sore losers look on with contempt writ large on their face, no doubt muttering under their breath, “She may have won the battle, but not the war!”

Stumbling and faltering reminds one of the LSA last year when Babra stumbled while climbing the steps to the stage and Gia Ali pronouncing category as “kut-giri.” What’s interesting to note is that the faux par also managed to slip by the editors and got aired on national TV.

Awards ceremonies also have their fair share of critics and to be quite honest, it’s not the same if you do not hear some skeptic spill the beans on the alleged favouritism taking on during the nominations or the heated arguments and abuses being hurled backstage. Then, of course, there are the killjoys who don’t have a single good thing to say about the big night out for the showbiz clan and trash nominations for being biased and influenced by personal preferences. Stylist Tariq Amin perhaps stands out as the biggest skeptics of the LSA and makes no bones about what he thinks of the fashion and entertainment industry’s coveted style awards. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that a giant in the genre of styling, Nabila, also his sworn competitor, bagged the sole credit of dolling up the guys and dolls for the LSA ceremony last year.

Last but certainly not the least are the much-sough after invitations. Everybody wants to be on the invitation list but only a fortunate actually make it. Being a guest at an award ceremony is a big thing for one gets to see the stars up close and personal, and become a part of entertainment history in the making. Another added benefit is that one gets to brag about it to envious friends and acquaintances.

All said and done, awards’ night is in a class apart and nothing can beat the exhilaration of seeing one’s favourite nominee win a deserving award for excellence. Besides all kinds of slip-ups and last-minute foul-ups, the awards remain the most anticipated of all showbiz events through the years, whether they be a celebration of Hollywood’s spectacular cinematic treats or a the more local style awards paying tribute to the beautiful people of local fashion and entertainment.
