Late last week, journalism’s most pretigious award, the Pulitzer Prize, was announced for 2004 by Columbia University.
For the first time since 1979, no award was presented for feature writing. However, two awards for best news photography were awarded this year.
The Pulitzer Board awards photo-journalists for their distinguished example of breaking news photography in black and white or colour, which may consist of a photograph or photographs, a sequence or an album.
Keeping this in mind, two awards, Best Breaking News Photography and Best Feature Photography, were handed out.
The Pulitzer for Breaking News Photography went to the photo team of Dallas Morning News. Photographers David Leeson and Cheryl Diaz Meyer (above) were honoured “for their eloquent photographs depicting both the violence and poignancy of the war with Iraq” (Pictures marked 1-3 on the right).
The Pulitzer for Feature Photography went to Los Angeles Times’ Carolyn Cole (below) “for her cohesive, behind-the-scene look at the effects of civil war in Liberia, with special attention to innocent citizens caught in the conflict.” (Pictures marked 4-7 on the right).
