Poor America
WITH reference to the article Poor America (February 29), it was a great and unique piece in the sense that it unearthed the ‘unthinkable’ that life could be so miserable in the land of the ‘dreams’ of so many.
The mention of the rampant bankruptcies, actions of ‘money-guzzling monsters’ like mortgage payments, health insurance, car insurance premiums have left families broke in spite of fact husbands and wives are both earning. Considering extreme physical difficulties in maintaining family life of middle-class Americans who are ‘pauperised’ and ‘dehumanized’, as against earnings of credit card companies ($87 billion in a year). All this coupled with ‘Bush’s famous tax cut for elitists, $45 billion’. In this context, it may be mentioned that this is only one side of the towering example of ‘success’ of the capitalist system.
‘Poor’ people of the Third World especially Pakistan, should also come to know the facts at present hidden, about the horrible effects of family and social life in America. Just a few eye-openers should be the high divorce rates, crimes incidence, unbelievable yet truth about the widespread shabby treatment of women and lastly but not the least, treatment of minorities at the hands of ‘champions’ of human rights and democracy in the world.

Truth about men and women
WITH reference to the article The truth about men and women (February 29), it was very enlightening.
Like the writer I also believe the same as women love sharing, men are really fearful when it comes to relationships. So they usually adopt a ‘get-them’ before ‘they-get-you’ attitude. And this is when women feel guilty, thinking all the time that they are not good enough, which further aggravates the problem.
Understand and to be understood is the key. It’s high time our society as a whole need to change their attitude.

The teacher that he was
WITH reference to the article The teacher that he was, (February 29,2004), Syed Abdu Zafar MM Askari was indeed a model teacher. The profession believed as prophetic is because of the lofty ideals and rational priorities of these personalities.
He believed in bringing reforms, beginning with the individuals around him. Unfortunately, for our society gone are the days when ability mattered and honesty considered as asset. And the decline has not come overnight, so our predecessors are to blame for most of the damage.
A select few have always enjoyed all luxuries of life and in all ages, but the application of law had rarely been selective in the good old days.
The teacher left at the ripe age of 84, but his contribution stands larger than his life, and one comes to conclude that people like him cannot be confined to a certain age or community. They are saviours, irrespective of caste, colour and creed and a living example for all having the endeavour to bring in place the tilted axis of their very own small worlds.

Valentine for singles
WITH reference to the article Valentine for singles (February 15), the writer has a very narrow approach. Maybe its significant for singles, but at the same time what will be its effect on youth? On this day everyone, irrespective of age, starts thinking along these lines.
I taught in a prestigious school where it was difficult to control the kids. Children are innocent. They do not know right from wrong. Their aim is to copy adults. Such ideas spoil the creativity of growing minds and keeps them away from studies. It develops an adverse effect on them. Do you allow your children to celebrate this day? If we want to give a healthy atmosphere to our youth, we should avoid all such celebrations.
