It is the day for love

WITH reference to the Net-Clip It is the day for love & romance (February 15), what I want to ask is that, how can young people love when they are not being loved by the system? Pakistan’s youth seem destined to face untold difficulties of life in due to unemployment. The poor of the nation (especially in rural areas) are being humiliated by the feudal system, while inflation and unemployment are destroying middle-class.

It is of utmost importance that in order to understand the problems facing Pakistan, we first try to understand the socio-politico-economic forces at work in the world.

The problems that confront Pakistan today deserve serious thought. Any correct appraisal of the issues involved, however, is not possible unless we first look at the background of events and then try to understand the politico-historical perspective and the forces at play behind the scenes.

Dissent of an individual

WITH reference to the article, Dissent of an individual (February 15), I fully agree with the writer that an individual has the right for dissent.

Unfortunately we are compelled to live in a society which deprives its individuals from their very basic right i.e. the right to oppose. This is a country where individuality is being crushed by the so-called norms and moss eaten values, where fresh and original thoughts are forbidden and where one is often labelled as “mad”, if one talks contrary to its set traditions.

Of inclusivists & exclusivists

WITH reference to the article Of inclusivists & exclusivists (February 1), the writer deserves appreciation in trying to shun out the differences and misunderstandings historians have created in the books, with the help of distorted facts between the two big neighbours of South Asia.

This article also has special significance in that it appears at a time when laudable efforts are being made to improve relations between the two countries. The recent thaw in Indo-Pak relations is no doubt, the result of the fruitful efforts made by the liberal-minded, unbiased and secular forces of the subcontinent.

Akbar has done a good service to the people of both the countries writing such a valuable peace of article. It is high time for the liberal writers and peace-loving people of the subcontinent to come forward and trace out the similarities that exist between us. It is a gradual process and will take time to make peace with India.

The winter of infamy

WITH reference to the article, The winter of infamy (February 22), it was only an episode in our chaotic history.

Be it winter or autumn, elected or selected authorities, the nation witnesses series after series of unpleasant episodes. And who cares about infamy, where money matters the most and people who own the land are only interested in their interests. It has become difficult to draw lines between right and wrong, truth and falsehood. People have started doubting the ones, once pious to them.

The over-splashed issue regarding Dr A Q Khan’s explosive adventures in not the only issue of its kind in the recorded history of atomic technology. Our own media, especially the press has made the most of the issue by exploiting the freedom of expression. The never ending debates and doubts do not reflect our political enlightenment. How bizarre!

An uneducated and the intelligentsia speak the same, the only difference being places. Issues and agonies are healed with time. The thing one is required to do is to learn from the experiences and has to be prepared for the age when the injuries start aching.
