The White Desert

With reference to the article, The White Desert January 25), the writer started from Sanghar and then went on to Mansurah in Taluka Sanjhoro and Makhi Lake. Personally I think that they are not related with the White Desert.

The original story started from my city Khipro, because it is the Gateway for Achhro Thar.

Personally I don’t agree with writer’s words that in case of an emergency people are unable to reach for medical help and most of them die.

I don’t know how long back the writer travelled through this area, but nowadays some new link roads have also been built to connect the remote areas of this region with Hathungo and Khipro.

Some NGOs are also working for the mass awareness of people and provide some basic facilities for the inhabitants of this region.

Mother and sons

With reference to the piece, Mother and sons (January 15), Amar Jaleel has presented a very touching story and has spun it out of pure imagination. It is without a doubt thought provoking. But if it is a true story, then it is heart asundering and painful!

All cultures, societies and religions recognize that it is only the mother who gives unconditional love to her offspring. It is therefore, no wonder that Islam places her on the highest pedestal and there are several prophetic traditions alluring to the need, for exercising utmost affection and love when dealing with parents and particularly “the Mother”.

Most fathers cuddle the pillow under their arms and leave the bedroom to catch upon sleep while the mother tends to the nursing of a sick or restless infant.

I am sure there must be several such real life stories present in our society. Blessed are those, whose parents are with them. They possess a priceless gift and it is their duty to take care of these gifts.

Extremism, human rights and Islam

With reference to the article, Extremism, human rights and Islam (February 1), Dr Hassan has very rightly said that the Muslims talk of justice but don’t deliver it to the people of their countries, and in particular to the women. Although said, but denied to the women are the rights given by Islam. Girls are not at all married for fear of diminution of the family jagirs, wealth and power. They are denied the choice of marriage and destined as karo-kari. They are denied education. Men become their (the women’s) masters by force in violation of the Quranic injunctions as enshrined in the Holy Quran (Surah Al Nisa 4:19 ).

As for Allah the Almighty, she says a very beautiful thing. We should love Him and be ‘conscious’ of his ordains. For fear the Quranic word is khauf.

Quinine: boon or bane?

With reference to the article Quinine: boon or bane? (January 25), I would like to say that no doubt some medicines prove to be toxic in higher doses, but the role of quinine in the mid of last century has been excellent. It saved millions of lives during malarial epidemics, particularly falciparum malaria. This was the only drug available that time.

Deafness is not the only dose related adverse effect of quinine. It can cause anaemia, allergic reactions, many others. Drugs should be used with caution. Doctors are often blamed for the ill-effects of these drugs, which is not right. And then there are thousands of quacks in our country.

These people, without any knowledge of basic medical sciences, art of diagnosis, particularly pharmacology, prescribe medicines. Doctors do make mistakes, like all humans do. They should be more careful. But we should address the root cause and that is the elimination of those people who play havoc with human lives.
