Yoga, youth and you

By Dur-e-Najaf

HAVE you ever wondered why women like Cher and Rekha look as young and as beautiful as they used to twenty years back? As a kid, I used to watch them with awe, young, beautiful, full of energy and idol of the youth. Not much has changed since!

However, the vital question here is, how did they do it? How have these women managed to look this young through all these years? Whereas the answer in Cher’s case is that she has heavily realized on plastic surgery, for Rekha, the secret lies in yoga. In fact, if gossip columns are anything to believe in, Bollywood circles credit Rekha as the only heroine in town who has been a yoga addict since she was a little girl. Yoga huh, no wonder Rekha is still the envy of thousands of girls around the world.

So now that you know the secret, what’s your plan on staying young and smart? I hope its not plastic surgery!

As the member of a family for who, obesity is a hereditary issue, I try not to gain weight. Because even an extra ounce, means months of hard work in the form of exercise, jog in the park and abstinence from the food I love. Though job, eh? Well, since I heard about yoga, I am willing to give this remedy a try. But even then, finding a good yoga instructor and then actually convincing yourself to go to the yoga centre daily is like a mission impossible, more for people like me. So I tried to find yoga at home, all thanks to the Internet.

After a bit of searching and trolling, I managed to find sites that are simple and really helpful. Sites that can help you easily learn a lot about yoga and then try it at home. Sites like www.yogasite.com. This link describes the different postures of yoga. It also helps you understand on how to start slowly and not be too hard on yourself and what kind of postures and styles are preferred.

Besides the postures, this site has a question and answer section where numerous queries are answered. From the simplest, like what is yoga, to the pertinent, will yoga help me loose weight, to the seemingly ridiculous, is yoga a religion? Questions are answered here.

A very relevant question of us ladies is that, is it okay to do yoga during pregnancy? Well, according to www.healthandyoga.com, yoga is great for pregnancy. Smooth pregnancy and a natural childbirth are just some of the benefits of yoga. But more importantly, yoga does wonders on the physical and mental development of the fetus. Ensuring a healthy baby is every mother’s dream and yoga helps you do just that.

This site describes in detail the five important tools of yoga during pregnancy, which include yoga exercises, breathing or pranayama, meditation and deep relaxation. To get the phenomenal benefits of yoga on your pregnancy, practice these easy routines regularly.

The site also claims that doing yoga is something due to which not only will you be on your way to a delightful pregnancy but also you will give your child an opportunity for best development.

Another site that provides a lot of information about yoga is www.santosha.com. The best link on this site is Yoga Postures Step-By-Step. Probably the most popular of all the links on this address, here one can see the postures illustrated (some are even animated!) and get step-by-step instructions along with an explanation of their benefits and tips on performing them correctly. The site also has very interesting articles related to yoga.

If someone needs to be very specific about the type of yoga he or she wants to do due to his or her anatomical problems, or any other health problems, then www.yogajournal.com is just the right site for you. This site contains search tools through which one can find answers by anatomical focus, therapeutic application, or contraindication, or just browse poses by name. These tools comprises of buttocks, abdomens, arms, bladder in the anatomical focus. Therapeutic applications have topics like hypertension, diabetes, infertility, menopause, insomnia and many more. The contraindications or cautions are for people with problems such as asthma, heart disease, knee injury, neck injury, menstruation etc.

Now lets get back to the topic we started this yoga journey to beating the aging process. According to yoga philosophy, it’s the flexibility of the spine, not the number of years since you were born, that determines a person’s age. At www.yoga.org.nz they say that yoga slows down the aging process by giving elasticity to the spine, firming up the skin, increasing circulation, removing tension from the mind and body, strengthening the abdominal muscles, eliminating unneeded weight, improving the muscle tone, correcting poor posture, calming the mind and so on.

It puts your body into a warm positive state of development that adds to your years. This site has all the exercises, postures and facts about healthy diet, psychological and physical benefits of yoga etc. All in all a complete site which is very informative and helpful if you are a starter at yoga.

The one really good thing about www.yogaclass.com is that is it beautifully designed and is full of vibrant colours. Other than that, it is boring with lengthy text pages with no illustrations. But, if you are the kind who loves to read, then go ahead, enjoy the site.

I hope these sites will help you as it has helped me understanding what yoga is and what it really do to help the body and mind of a person. And though, I don’t expect to turn into Rekha or come even close to that level of fame and prosperity, but, I am willing to give it a shot.
